i believe that Umich is a pretty high reach for me but please give me a quick opinion on what you think my chances are!

I WAS DEFERRED EA (not a surprise...they probably took one look at my gpa and threw my app aside)

**applying for biology

GPA (Weighted): 3.55 (very low...i know but it was mostly because of a C i got during freshman year during a chinese course)hopefully they take the time to look at the gpa of my science courses!!

SAT: 2110/2400 superscore. 1420/1600 (760/m and 660/CR)
690 Bio SAT 2
720 math level 2

taking/took 5 APs. AP STAT, english lang, bio, english lit, econ
(4s on my AP stat and lang) and took a lot of honors courses

I got all As on my bio course during freshman year and sent in a 90 quarter grade for AP bio(since im taking it senior year) i got a 92 on my midterm and my gpa for senior year so far is above 4 (when weighted)

solid ECs, nothing super eye catching though
PSAT national merit finalist and listed umich as my first choice college
and im out of state (PA) which i know doesnt help ):

if it helps i was accepted to umcp scholars which is my second choice if umich doesnt work out..

I am no expert, but I think your GPA is going to hurt you mostly because you are OOS. They seem to take a slim number of OOS kids, and I know at least for EA the GPA cut-off seemed to be around a 3.85 UW. Your scores are very good, and you definitely show an upward trend in your GPA and you took some rigorous classes, so hopefully that will help… best of luck to you!

It is hard to tell. If your unweighed GPA in 10th and 11th grade was over 3.8, you have a chance. But if your unweighed GPA remained below 3.7 throughout, the odds are not good.

One Charlie in a Chinese class does not make a 3.55 weighted GPA. If you are taking multiple AP’s and a lot of honors courses, your unweighted GPA must be south of 3.5 and OOS they are not likely to be interested.

There’s always a chance until the final word comes out but I would focus on UMCP scholars as your likely destination and let an acceptance to U-M be an expected pleasant surprise rather than a waitlist be an unexpected disappointment.

bump…so is it unrealistic to keep hoping for an acceptance at this point? i wish umich would have just rejected me during EA instead of leaving me wondering if i had a chance

i know, i wish they would reject more people though…because a waitlist is basically a rejection. i think last year only forty something people got in from four thousand people who accepted a waitlist position…

thanks for your input JRswish! best of luck if you applied too!

Your GPA will hurt you most but you still have a shot definitely. My GPA was actually slightly lower than yours and i was accepted EA into LSA, albeit my test scores were slightly higher. So while people say you need a 3.7 or 3.8 to get in, in reality there are some who will achieve entry with substantially below this. If your essays were good and they like your extracurriculars you still have a decent shot at acceptance.
