Chance me please!

at first when i visited the school i wasn’t too crazy about it, but now i figured that might have had something to do with a lack of students on campus, and therefore a lack of general activity. so now i’m applying to brandeis so i can find a nice jewish husband for myself. just kidding. but seriously… please chance me!

UW GPA: 3.6
SAT: 1980 (700 CR, 580 M, 700 W)
SAT II: 730 Lit
ACT: 29
class rank: 80/542 (top 15%)

my biggest weakness would probably be my class rigor… i’ve taken mostly honors since freshman year, but i’ve only taken 2 AP’s (this year- English Lit and Psych).

EC’s:

 • national honor society- 11th and 12th grade
 • french honor society- since 9th grade
 • kick-off mentor- 11th/12th grade (basically get assigned a group of freshman who you help adjust to the transition into high school)
 • hebrew high school (yeah!)- 8th, 9th and 10th grade
 • JV tennis team- 10th and 11th grade

volunteer work:

 • volunteer for devereux center, a home for children for special needs
 • teacher’s aid for my old first-grade teacher, helping her fifth-grade class edit their short stories, research projects, etc.
 • homework club- helped elementary school kids with their homework
 • various tutoring/other volunteer work (odd jobs) for NHS and FHS

summer stuff:

 • worked as a camp counselor summer after 11th grade- 30 hours a week for five weeks
 • summer after 10th grade, was a student enrolled in exploration program at yale university- took classes on film and the media for three weeks

so, that’s about it… let me know what you think!

You have an alright chance. Your Math SAT is pretty low, but your GPA is decent. I’d say the lack of class rigor and low Math SAT may do you in. However, I definitely think you still have a shot.

yeah, not taking harder courses has definitely been my biggest regret throughout my high school career. and math just sucks. it is definitely not my strong suit in comparison to reading and writing. want to know what i got on my Math I subject test? 560. getting a 560 on what might possibly be the easiest subject test, and a 730 on the Lit makes me incredibly unbalanced in my skills. definitely didn’t send in that score.

my ACT scores are really unbalanced, as well. 34 on the reading and 30 on the writing, and a 26 in the math and science. UGH! i really hope brandeis overlooks my weakness in the maths and sciences and embraces my strengths in reading and writing. i heard brandeis doesn’t have a lot of enthusiastic english students, anyway.

Normally, I would say that you would be on the cusp. However, recently Brandeis has been admitting more students and, without a significant increase in applicant pool strength, this means a lower level of student as well. So, with the new standards, I think you stand a fairly decent shot of getting in.

EDIT: I don’t know for sure that the pool of applicants hasn’t increased in strength. However, I think this is a pretty fair assumption.
