Chance me please!

First time asking the forum to chance me. Before any negativity, please note this is all honest information and is not meant to be pretentious if it is. Also, please pardon the jumbled format. Please let me know (if you can) if you think I'm very likely, likely, neutral or unlikely to be accepted. Sorry if I provided too much detail. Thank you!! :)

-Rank 1 of 241. Public school.

-Attend magnet school for science and technology as well

-8 ap/college classes junior year, 10 this year. All "A's".

-4.4/4 gpa

-Amazing rec letters

-Really good essays (witty/clever short answers. Very unique and thoughtful supplement main essays.)

-Wrote 2 research papers (one on electromagnetic testing and the other on satellite link quality contour testing)

-3 mentorships. Two at Nasa and one at a military company that works with drones.

-Sat. Crit: 750. Math: 770. Writing: 700.

-Sat subject tests. World hist:790. US hist: 760. Math two: 690. Physics: 670 (yeah...my class didn’t cover 35% of the material and no time to study. It was a really intense class taught by a nuclear physics phd from Taiwan. We did calc based Newtonian and electricity and magnetism. No thermo, waves etc…)

-Three 4s and three 5s on 6 AP exams. (4 on ap physics c e&m. perhaps help negate that 670?) ap scholar with distinction.

-Founded a Government Club and recruited 54 people (work on campaigns. voter registration). President.

-Expanded Model UN to 64 people (from like 30ish). Won best delegate in a 180 person committee. President.

-Founded a sea scout ship and grew it to have $250,000 in assets now. We do competitive sailboat racing.

-400+ volunteer hours aboard tall 17th century sailing ships at a colonial museum. Also a costumed interpreter there. Also hosted a video series for the museum.

-Debate team captain. Went to states in my first season debating. Expanded team from 4 to 10ish

-White, male

-Really good at interviews.

-Extra listed stuff:
Boys state. NASA Hunch program (traveling to houston for "vomit comet" zero-g testing of governor's school project. representing the school at a symposium there). Black belt. Did an engineering project on Biochar for CO2 sequestration (1st junior to get honors seal as a result)

-Want to be an entrepreneur and then run for political office. My recs say I will do those things (teachers strongly hinted that) and I made my intentions clear in my app so its consistent and not out of the blue.

I chose electrical engineering, economics and Chinese in the yale questions. Will my subject test score in physics sink me?

If possible, don’t report Physics. It has a generous curve, so it’d actually help you a lot if you didn’t mention it.

Other than that, you have a slightly better than average shot. You are qualified, and slightly “better” than the average accepted person, but that still puts you at a 40-45% acceptance chance.

So, great, yet that you are still unlikely (because it’s Yale, they don’t just accept great, but the best. And, it’s slightly random).

@UCschoolsftw I reported the physics  the yale website said to report all sats and all subject tests so i did. Oh well. i’m applying to an absurd amount of top tier schools so i should be fine. i applied to princeton for econ and only sent my world, us and math 2 subject tests. Think i have a better chance there since I chose econ and didnt send the physics subject test?

That should help. Personally, I’d avoid sending any SAT IIs that are <730. But, that’s just me.

Good luck!

Your rank is good, however your scores are average to a bit below average for Yale. You seem to have a decent shot; whether or not you can distinguish yourself from the other 30,000 applicants is going to be the key.

Just remember that Yale tends to be a reach for everyone. It’s a crapshoot. Also, they took more in the SCEA round this year, so the RD rate could possibly drop to 3-4%. Good luck!

Also, with all due respect to UCschoolsftw, the 40-45% figure means nothing. It’s really impossible to quantify your chance of admission at HYPSM. You will be an appealing candidate if you can package yourself correctly (which it seems that you’ll hopefully be able to do). If not, you’re just another smart kid with good scores and 1000 ECs.

If you are going to give advice about things like test reporting, be sure that you know the policy for the school. Y does not accept Score Choice, and since the OP has not taken the ACT, they will need to report all SAT and Subject tests taken.

@ivymatt

Your resume looks very similar to mine and I would not be surprised at all if you were to get in (I’m a freshman this year after being recruited for STEM last year…PM me if you’re curious about that). Your scores are only slightly concerning, although your research papers are a BIG hook. I’m sure you know that Yale is trying to recruit more STEM kids, so I think your chances are pretty decent (in my estimation, better than your chances at Princeton).

Nice! Thanks. will do

You’ve got a really good application overall. Don’t worry about physics. Your course load and extracurriculars speak for themselves, and Ivies LOVE it when you’re an eagle scout. Your chances are good, though that doesn’t guarantee anything at Yale unfortunately. Good luck!

@ivymatt

What a fantastic résumé! It seems like you not only perform extremely well in school but also have a variety of impressive extracurriculars. I am a junior and am taking 8 weighted credits and saw that you’re taking 10 this year. My school system just allows us to take 8 but yours is probably different. Anyways, how did you manage to take 10 and should I look into trying to do that to set myself apart next year?

For anyone searching through college chance me threads wondering about their chances:

Accepted to Brown (with a likely letter), Dartmouth, Duke, Rice, UVa (full ride finalist), W&M (full ride finalist), Ga Tech and Va Tech.

Waitlisted to Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, UChicago and Vanderbilt.

Rejected to Yale, Princeton, Upenn and Cornell.

Not so hot “Why __?” essays for Upenn, Cornell and UChicago. Best of luck.
