I have applied to Deerfield, Choate Rosemary Hall, Andover, Loomis, NMH, Hotchkiss, Hill, and Peddie as a repeat freshy… I currently go to a international school and received good grades. My dream school is Hotchkiss. I have listed my stats below. What are my chances of getting in?
SSAT: 83%
Korean living in Beijing
full payment
My extracurriculars are:
Varsity Swimming ( My hook), raced in FINA World cup, live streamed by ESPN.
Varsity Track
I have a community service project where I make vermin-compost and give it out to farmers near my compound, and gave a TEDx talk about it.
I am in the most advanced math class in my school, getting in the top 1% for both the AMC 8 and the Gauss.
All my interviews were at least 45minutes long
Some coaches told me that they signed my name for the recruiting list.
I am in the best band in my school ( I play the alto sax)
I am also a jazz lover, playing in the jazz band for 4 years.
I forgot to mention that I am trilingual. I speak Korean Chinese and English fluently. I also have great essays and recs. However, I am very concerned with my ssat score… I am also the co-captain of varsity swim team in my school as a freshman. I am guaranteed in varsity swimming in any school I am applying. My time for the 50free would have placed me in 7th in the championships last year. My interviews were very chill and smooth.
@madswimmer132
Just out of curiosity, what was your 50 free/100 free time?
Honestly, the AOs might be worried about your SSAT score, but if you’re a national/world (?) championship swimmer and the coaches have your name on their varsity list, AND you’re full pay, you have an EXTREMELY good chance, in my opinion.
It looks like everything else is STELLAR, especially swimming, except for your SSAT score. I’m no AO but if I were one, I honestly would overlook that to accept you. I believe SSAT scores are, although IMPORTANT, they are mainly there just to confirm your academic ability and not much else (SSAT in its official guide prides itself on being I think 90%+ for accurate ability, I believe). If your grades are excellent and your teacher recommendations are excellent, I think they would be willing to overlook your SSAT scores.
Please note that none of us here are AOs and what we input for your chances are just our personal opinions. Many of us are applicants too, just like you, around 14-16.
(DARN IT I HAVE TO COMPETE AGAINST YOU FOR ANDOVER WHYYYYY
I swim in short course METERS , my times are,
50 free: 25.1 (converted to SCY, 00:22.53)
100 Free 58.31 (converted to SCY, 52.53) - Yea, my endurance sucks
50 Fly 27.8 (converted to SCY, 00:24.39)
100 Fly 1:02 (converted to SCY,00:55.85) - I recently starting to swim fly, I will try to swim a minute for 100 fly before my next school year starts.
After looking at the last years championships times, I realized my times times are not even close to being special… Were there any applicants in previous years with similar stats with me that got in?
What are your times and stats?
@madswimmer132: I’m not sure if you are intentionally trying to be humble because you are more than qualified for varsity!!
Are you male or female? I’m sure that your times would qualify for SECTIONALS in my area in the US…that is not at all slow! And you’re only currently in 9th grade!! If you are female, I think you would qualify for sectionals in all of the events you posted. Not sure about males. You can compare your times to the meet results of current swimmers at the schools you listed above at nepssa.org.
My times are terrible, hahah (100 Free - 1:06/1 minute and 6 seconds in SCY…I’m a bad racer).
I don’t know if there were applicants in previous years that had the same stats, I’m not an admissions officer so I have no clue at all. Sorry!
I suddenly realized something really terrible…
I have been in touch with all the coaches, exchanging emails every two weeks but I have NEVER sent an AO an email… ( except the interview thank you letter)… did u exchange emails with ur AO?
@thelittleswimmer
@madswimmer132: Are your interviewer and AO the same person? Assuming from your post, I think so, but I would just like to make sure.
Coincidentally, I did the same thing, but my AO and interviewer are different people. I stayed in contact and built up a good relationship with my AO until the deadline passed (my AO became busy after that), but for my interviewer, I just sent a thank you card. And I just realized this mistake too recently, so I sent some follow-up emails. I don’t think it can hurt to exchange emails now. They might not reply, but it would let them know that you’re still interested.
How do I know if my interviewer and AO is the same person?
@thelittleswimmer
Gasp!! You’re fast.
Just out of curiosity, what’s your 100 Back (SCY) time?
You have great ECs/stats. The only weakness is your SSAT score, which they will probably overlook.
Good luck! Btw, you’re too fast… jkjk
Your other weakness is being overrepresented i.e. asian applying from asia. I do not know enough about swimming to know how good your times are, but it is harder to get in as in international student
@madswimmer132: Did you have an on-campus interview or on off-campus interview?
At some schools, you are paired with an AO at some point during the admissions process. This person is someone from the Admissions Team whom you can ask for help from (questions, comments, etc.,), and usually an AO represents a certain state OR an international country. They’ll usually email you and say something such as “Hello! Thanks for applying to _______, if you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me!”
If an AO didn’t contact you directly, you probably would have had to look it up directly on the website to see which member of the AO you should contact if you have any questions/concerns. I know Andover divides theirs up into 9th grade Female Applicants, 9th grade Male Applicants, etc., and usually there are 1-2 people handling these groups (Andover calls these “personal application advisors”). Andover lists the emails of each member for applicants to contact.
If you interviewed off-campus with an alumni, then that is not your AO.
If you interviewed on-campus with a member of the faculty, then that is not your AO.
Sorry if that seemed a bit confusing! Let me know if I need to explain further.
I really do not think any of this is relevant now…they are busy now you do not need to be emailing any of them about anything. You need to sit tight for the next three weeks.
I had an on campus interview. @thelittleswimmer
How much would my ssat affect me? I have an individual score of Q 95, V 76, R 52 @mathman1201
Hmm, your Verbal and Reading might raise eyebrows at the schools you are applying to, but your ECs might overrule them.
Just out of curiosity, what’s your 100 Back time? If you feel comfortable sharing, of course.
@madswimmer132: Your question about the SSAT is actually one of the most widely asked questions here on CC. The honest answer here is that no one knows. It’s all up to the AOs. They will consider it, of course, but how much they consider it is up to them.
From what I know, the SSAT Official Guide states that it is 90% accurate in predicting test takers’ academic abilities (I’m paraphrasing from memory here). So the SSAT is probably for the admissions office to gauge your academic abilities since each school is different and each school has different grading scales. An A in one school may be a B+ in another. Again, this is just my opinion on what the AOs use the SSAT for and may not be truly accurate.
@mathman1201
I dont swim backstroke. but the last time i swam it, I got a 1:06. (00:59.45 SCY). Hey mathman. wher is your dream school and do u mind sharing ur stats?
I am also a Chinese living in Korea not Korean living in Beijing, sorry.
Wow, that’s fast!
I’ll PM you.
