Hey everyone, I'm Vincent and I'm applying to Exeter, Andover, SPS, and Hotchkiss.
I'm Asian, but I was born in the US :P Oh, and I'm in the 8th grade.

I took a practice SSAT and I got
MATH: 800
READING: 718....
VERBAL: 746
My essays are written in the traditional 5 paragraph way.. Intro, 3 points, Conclusion. Considering all those writing awards you lot are getting, I suppose I'm not too good at writing :P

My EC's are
Swimming: 4 Years..... Travelled around China to compete... got some first place medals.
Art: 4 Years..... This is something I am VERY passionate about, I'm the best in my grade level. I have an "Excellence in Art" certificate from the school.
Piano: 6 Years..... ehhh no awards or anything, I just play songs I like. e.g Canon by Johann Pachelbel.
Ultimate Frisbee.... 2 Years
Basketball..... 2 Years
Student Council/Government: 1 Year... I'm the Executive Treasurer of Middle School.

I don't know if living in Beijing, China is a contributing factor to the small amounts of EC's I have. Because in my area, there is no community service going on and much less volunteer work for hospitals. =/

My Recommendation Forms shouldn't be too bad, I'm very good at math, and my Humanities teacher likes me.
MY REPORT CARDS.... my school goes by a scale of 1-5, 5 being like an A+ 1 being an F, and a 3 being a Satisfactory. I get mostly 4's and 5's. However this year, for the first quarter of 8th grade I got all 4's and two 3's.....

OTHER INFO. I'm REALLY good at art, I'm not bragging or anything but for the applications i can send in my art work so do you think that will help me? I'M NOT APPLYING FOR FA. I go to an international private school.

20 people viewed this and no comments yet :(

Are you aware that SPS does not have a swim team? However, they do have an ultimate team and a very strong art program.

All the schools you listed are very competitive for any candidate. If you are serious about attending boarding school in the U.S., I would apply to more schools to give yourself options. It is particularly challenging for Asian since so many apply.

I would also work hard to get your grades back up. Having them slip this year before applying to boarding school will not help you.

Lastly, what are your SSAT percentages? I’m not sure how to translate the scores you have above as they differ by gender and age.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you!
My SSAT score would be considered around the 92nd percentile.
I am working hard at school and trying to get get my grades back up. I have already completed my interviews for those schools, so I don’t think my parents would be willing to fly back to the US for more interviews. I’m aware of the “Off-campus” Interviews, but I really, really would like to get into these schools.
Agh, I’m really nervous about this! Reading a bunch of other people’s EC’s are freaking me out! My only hooks would be that I’m the Executive Treasurer of Middle School, and I require no FA.

BUMP please help :)

I would suggest you to apply Choate as they have a great art & music program. During my my son’s revisit last spring, I heard that quite a few Chinese students from China at Choate.

Just focus on your application now and good Luck!

I know what you mean about community service, where im from the only people under 18 I’d heard of doing it were doing it by court order lol. Your ECs seem fine, people here appear to have every EC under the sun but they could easily be exaggerating and CC is only a small percent of applicants anyway. Good luck!
