Chance me re: Gift Aid

As a parent I’m less concerned about acceptance, and more focused on the true cost.

I hear anecdotally that ASU can provide “good” gift aid. Wondering that might mean in my case.

Soon to be senior D is looking at Business (I hear they have a good school), SATs: 1150/1600, 3.7 GPA, some good leadership experience and lots of community service.

We are in NYS and next year will have a EFC of about $15k per child. SUNYs are always an option but I want to see what other supposedly generous schools would offer.

I’m guessing gift aid would be based on need and not so much on merit. ASU’s Net Price Calculator didn’t ask EFC, estimated about $8k in scholarship and net of $33k.

Thanks in advance for any advice and opinion.

I don’t think ASU gives need-based aid to OOS students. At least I haven’t heard that they do. They did offer us all sorts of loans, which don’t count in my book. They are pretty generous with merit aid. That $8,000 per year with a not very high test score is pretty good for a big state school to give an OOS student. Many state schools have much higher requirements for OOS to get any merit aid. But are you sure you entered your numbers correctly? For anything >=1000/1600 SAT and a 3.7 GPA the estimator gives $11,500 annual scholarship and the residual cost (if you aren’t in Barrett, which is more expensive) is $22,600. The most ‘gift’ money is reserved for NMFs, who get full tuition.
