ps.. im applying for cas! do i have a chance? oh and do yall think it's alright if my art supp is postmarked tomorrow? thanks

I've gotta be perfectly honest....when it comes to these competitive schools especially being that a phenomenal amount of seniors apply to NYU, there is no way to predict chances. the valedictorian at my friend's school didn't get into the school last year and someone with a lower rank and fewer leadership roles got into NYU instead of the valedictorian. You have worked really hard so just hope for the best. I wish you luck! =)

NYU only wants ONE teacher rec and a guidance rec. The adcom who visited our school supposedly veiws kids sending more than one as not being able to follow instructions (but of course if your stats are really strong, or both recs are equally as good, it doesn't matter if they toss one.) He said a strong "NO" to any other ancillary recommendations or supplemental materials. If one Rec is stronger than the other, you better hope it's the one they pick and read.

That said, your EC's are great but your GPA, rank and tests are Loooow for the vast majority of your schools. Also, NYU doesn't look at the writing SAT (which will hurt you). Now I'm assuming your'e an excellent writer which helps, but only if your stats are sufficient.

Here's my guess:

Barnard College (my dream school, i'd do anything to go here) Hail Mary/Uber reach
Brown University (5 year duel degree program brown/risd) Nope see ablove
Rhode Island School of Design (5 year duel degree program brown/risd) ????
Georgetown University Reach, far reach
New York University reach, far reach
Sarah Lawrence College more of match
Wellesley College Reach/Very Far Reach
Boston College Reach very Far reach
Swarthmore College don't know
Vassar College Reach/far reach
UCLA/Berkeley ""
Fordham University reach
Northeastern University match but no shoo-in
University at Buffalo Honors College ?????

Did you run these by your guidance counselor? Your folks??? Have you checked the average SAT scores and GPA's for these schools? That said, stranger things have happened, with some kick A** essays, maybe you'll just get into a couple. But I'm worried you don't have enough real safties for your stats (I'm talkin Penn State, University of Minnisota, Univ Vermont, Miami of Ohio....)good schools whose average accepted GPA and test scores fit into your range.

Good Luck

thank you for the posts!

what do you think about my chances for washington university in st louis? i just forgot to add it to the list. thankss

^^^
i think i've chanced you before... anyways, washu is probably a big, big reach. they wouldn't care about your ECs as much as some of the other schools on your list might.

which school's do you think will care most about the ecs?

and salem- my guidance counselor is crazy and didnt give me nearly as great feedback as you all are giving me. I think she was too supportive of everything and was very optimistic.. which kinda caused me to be optimistic, which probably is not good at all in this situation lol

eskimo, you've been a mad poster (I read a bunch of your posts) which is OK cause you want some feedback...but are you listening to anyone? Your guidance counselor should loose his job for signing off on that list. You obviously are very successful and motivated but a very average student. And that's OK...there are schools for that. Tulane in New Orleans is a vibrant creative place with a great reputation (and they are hungry for serious applicants)

People last week were telling you last week you needed more safetys (when there was still time) No....Wash U is nobody's safety it's one of the hardest schools in the country, did you check out the stats before applying? 1/2 the kids are senior class presidents...

And the schools "won't just see the weighted GPA" they quickly convert the b's into 3's and the A's into 4's.

How where your SAT II's? I'm pulling for you girl, but I'm soooo upset because you deserved better advice on this REALLY IMPORTANT decision!!!

Best to you

well i was class pres last year and im vice this year! lol

no i know what you're saying. and, on a serious note, i really appreciate all of your feedback. I was kinda screwed anyway though because our guidance counselors wont mail anything in unless we give it to them atleast 2 weeks before hand. Although it would have been easy for me to go for jan 15 dates on my own.. i can't really apply without everything sent from guidance you know?

for sat 2s, i got a 620 in math 2 and a 690 in math 1. not that great at all i know. salem, i really appreciate you rooting for me :) it's a change from some of the negativity of the people coming at my life on here lol

RISD's the last due date for me on feb 15th.. and then I think im applying to manhattan college as a safety and that's not due for a few months..

I dont know. of course I'm kinda distraught about the whole situation but you're right, it was my responsibility and I made terrible decisions. Judging from what some people are saying.. it seems like the only school I will def get into is UB. and maybe risd if i have a kick ass portfolio. great.

You or your parents should go to guidance with a list of rolling schools or more realistic match schools with Feb 1 dates and say "after last minute research we weren't pleased with the advice/guidance eskimo got and she needs her transcript mailed to mailed ASAP". They can even mention the fact that the counselor didn't even inform you of the NYU recommendation policy (they should have caught it even if you didn't) The last thing a school as competitive as yours wants is such a strongly perceived and respected student NOT to get into all but one of the 14 schools she applied to because of bad advice.

There is a theroy that if you apply to 12 reaches...you'll get into one. All's you need to do is personally touch ONE Adcom and you can write. But be realistic, if you don't expect to get into those schools, you'll be totally psyched when you do. I didn't think I'd get into CAS at NYU...but I did.

But don't sit back without a fight, you have options, it's NOT too late and the school can't refuse to send the stuff in, they have nothing but time now. If you need help I have 5 huge college directories and can help you find some.

You can do it Eskimo, your'e future depends on it and you have too much promise

i agree with what salem is saying, but i definitely would not criticize your GC. it's not your GC's job to make sure that you are following the application instructions correctly; that is your job. i repeat, DO NOT even bring that up. (there is a good chance that if you are lucky you will be waitlisted at a couple of these schools and you will need a GC that is on your side to advocate for your admission.)

also, at least at my school there is not a whole lot that a GC can do to persuade students against applying to too many reach schools. it's not the GC's position to tell you whether or not you actually CAN or CANNOT get into certain schools. if that were the GC's job, he/she probably would have told you to flat out not apply to a majority of those reach schools. (i would like to let you know that a GC at my school actually almost lost his job for telling someone that she couldn't get into a certain school.) GC's are only there to provide guidance. it is the students job to research colleges and assess their chances of admissions and then ask for guidance from the GC. hence the term guidance counselor.

despite all this, i am still surprised that your GC did not step over the line and simply tell you to play the admissions game more cautiously.

anyways, it seems to me that you are pretty adamant about going to a top school and your GC realized this so he/she tried to figure out a way for you to get into these schools. i think that's why he/she put so much effort into your recs and i'm betting that your GC trusted/made sure that you had excellent essays. i think your GC's thinking is that your resume, essays, and recs will overshadow your mediocre test scores and academic record.

just to let you know i'm rooting for you too. :)

New jack is right about pi**ing off your guidance counselor. I don't think it's wrong going in there and saying "now that the rush is over, It's come to my attention that I didn't have enought match and no safty schools on my list, what can we do?

Guidance counselors can't MAKE you apply to a match school if you only want reaches, but it sounds like from what eskimo said, it didn't even occur to them and CC is the first time she's hearing this stuff?

It's not too late,

PUSH

ok...i sent in like two extra recommendations: 1 extra from a teacher...nd the other from my work/community service institution....u think theyll count that against me? both of them are good recommendations...i didnt no that they wud mind so much :(...im an international student btw (if that helps :P)...

The Adcom I spoke to said they toss them. I doubt they hold it against you, the common application has 2 teacher rec forms and I'm sure many people send in two. The only problem is if there's one better than the other and they look at the first one they open and toss the other. They do say on their website something to the effect "follow all directions, don't assume you have found a better way to apply'

Some kids go nuts and send portfolios (for non-portfolio, non-art, visual majors) and a bunch of recommendations. Some schools don't mind (some welcome the extra stuff) of the 12 schools I looked at to apply NYU and Michigan were adiment about NOT wanting it.

i got into tisch, the film school at nyu early, here at my stats for reference
White Male
GPA: 3.623 UW
SAT: M-720 CR-680 W-650
Recs: Very good, one from my guidance counselor, really likes me, and a film teacher who said i was one of the best he's ever seen (not trying to be arrogant, just honest :)
SAT II: US History: 740 Math 1C: 710
3 AP Classes, scored a 4 on the AP US last year
Excellent public high school

EC's: President of church youth group
President of Film Club
Crew Head for sound department for the theatre program

salem1, Newjack88.. thanks so much for your input
if it helps at all, i applied to stienhardt with a portfolio

anyone else out there?

If your portfolio blows them away, you will be accepted. Yes the artists who judge your artwork will have to work with the admissions committee, but portfolio is no. 1. If your GPA and SAT aren't up to par, there's not much that the judges can do for you, but you seem to be within range for Steinhardt as a whole, so just worry about your portfolio passing!

gEEe_whilikers- thanks for the advice! I wish i knew what a "passing" portfolio looks like or a portfolio that will "blow them away." Do you know where I can find such examples or links to other steinhardt hopefuls' portfolios? thanks :]

:)i got in.

Congrats Eskimo!!!
