Hi there,
I'm from a very highly ranked california public high school with a 2160 SAT, 740 SAT II History a 3.5 GPA unweighted, a 5 on the US HIstory, 5 on AB Calc and 4 on AP Spanish with plenty extracurricular such as playing the violin since the age of four. In addition i will have played four years of baseball and cross country at my high school with 153 hours of community service as well.

I just applied to U of Michigan, any thoughts on my chances to get into my top choice?

I'm happy to chance you out. Your grade average at UW 3.5 GPA is kinda weak, and Michigan typically does not like to admit students of that GPA. However, you have taken a few AP classes, which may help you out a little. Your SAT of 2160 is very solid and places you around the 75th percentile of Michigan's SAT range. This may also help you out. Your ECs are pretty good as well, because managing your time with 2 sports + music + community service is not a very easy thing to do. I can't do that myself.

Overall, you should be immensely proud of what you've done in high school ,though you seem to have struggled a bit with school work ... though that's understandable ... do you come from Troy High School in Fullerton, CA? I heard that school is ranked 31st in the nation. Your "high-ranking" school may also help alleviate your GPA problem. If you are a legacy or URM, that may also help you out in admissions.

Overall, I'll say that you are a match. You could have increased your chances by having a really good counselor rec (were you close to your counselor? did he/she know you well?) and teacher rec and by writing really good essays. You already did yourself a huge favor by applying this early. (My school doesn't even start counselor recs until Sept 16. It sucks really, really badly.) However, you are an OOS, and admissions for OOS are typically more dififcult than for IOS.

In the event that Michigan waitlists you or denies you, don't worry! It's not the end of the world. You can also consider applying to Michigan State University, do well there, then transfer to Michigan after 2 years or so at State. California also has two very wonderful and highly-ranked/prestigious schools: UCLA and Berkeley. You might have a better shot at those schools since you live in Cali.
