Chance Me to V tech.

Is it too late to start preparing for early decision? I heard early decision has more chance for me to get in than regular decision because there is more space to begin with and they see that I really want to go there.

I'm trying to get in to Engineering for Tech

Your SAT is really going to hurt you.

The thing is engineering majors still need to write papers. They don’t just take Math and Science classes, thus 500 CR is a big OUCH. You can’t academically make it if you fail core classes like English.

The positive is you are a 1st generation student. I am not sure how it will work for your transcripts, because you went mainstream out of ESOL in 9th grade. That means they will not see you were in ESOL in middle school. If they don’t see that, combined with low SAT CR/W they will have problems justifying the SAT.

Additionally, your w gpa is very close to your uw. Without seeing the grades, the 1st thing that pops into my head is that you had 4 honors and 1 AP through your jr yr. Mathematically, even if the wt for honors was .5, and 1.0 for AP added in, you should have more than .15 in differentiation…unless you struggled in those courses, which again would hurt.

Use the essay to discuss your personal background of being 1st generation American, and how you have had to overcome this issue in the education system. They need to know that language was your only barrier, but you are improving.

Finally, since you are volunteering in DC, I am assuming you are from DC, that can help or hurt. Are you attending public or private? DC is infamous for the poor quality of their public school system, so they may overlook a lot because you attend public school. If you attend private, all bets may be off.

You need to understand that as a DC resident you will be placed in the OOS pile. OOS pile is @30% of the incoming class and you will be competing with people from across the nation.

Good luck…remember we can only give you 100% guarantee on 1 thing. If you don’t apply you have 100% chance of not getting admitted.

Your GPA and SAT are going to hurt you for admission into the E-school. The average for VT last year was over a 3.9 and the average SAT was a 1250. The engineering students are the ones that are bringing that SAT score to where it is since I know plenty of engineering students right now that came in with 1300+ SAT scores. I am not saying that you won’t get into the College of Engineering, because I know that VT cuts off the engineering admission at a math SAT of 600. Anything below that that has applied to engineering, but is good enough for the university gets placed in an undecided major called, “University Studies.” You are over 600, so your math SAT looks decent to VT, but your other scores are going to hurt you. It all depends on where you are from though. If NOVA, it is EXTREMELY competitive; just a heads up. Good Luck. =)

It’s actually consideration that starts at a 600 for both CR & M for engineering. You can certainly apply to the e-school but understand that Genderal Studies would be the offer if accepted.
Having said this, there are only a couple of required first year engineering classes that can not be taken from Gen’l Studies. At least one can be picked up at the local CC during your first year. You can request a transfer into engineering if your freshman grades are high enough. Check prev threads on this, or veteran posters for clairification, but I know it can be done.
Finally, I think it is arrogant to assume that the engingeering school as a whole is pulling up the entrance stats. Archicture is often harder to get into. This may be true on math scores due to the large number of engineering students. However I think you’ll find plently of LA students with very high scores, and plenty of engineering students with CR & W at near 600. Be careful of generalizations towards the rest of the student body.
