I’d like a straight chancing please, then comments.

I’ll also be taking a bunch of summer APs, like 3-4 to boost my GPA further. Maybe I can get to a 3.6UW, 4.0W IDK.

You’re correct in assuming that your GPA will hurt you quite a bit in admissions. However, you have a fantastic SAT score that may compensate for the low GPA at 1-2 “reach” schools. Plus, your EC’s aren’t too shabby either. Top business schools love to see extra curriculars related to a business field. That inernship will look pretty good. Assuming that your GPA stays at 3.78 W, this is the best I can say for you.

UVA: High Reach OOS (1 kid got in from my high school in IL…he had a 36 ACT and 4.0)
NYU CAS: Low Reach (aren’t you interested in business? Looking at Stern seems like a better fit for your interests, albeit harder to get into…)
U Mich: Low Reach OOS
Boston College CSOM: Low Reach
Notre Dame: Low/Mid Reach OOS
Colgate: Mid Reach
Emory: Mid Reach
Carnegie Mellon Tepper: Mid/High Reach (Tepper is a very small, elite business school. I think they only accept less than 200 kids each year)
Tulane: Match
Colby: N/A (don’t know enough about school to chance)
Hamilton N/A (don’t know enough about school to chance)
UChicago: High Reach (UChicago loves kids with high GPAs)
Cornell Hotel: High Reach

Thanks, got it, so what do you think if I can get 3.6 UW, 4 W? And yeah I wan Stern but realistically all I can do is try to transfer later.

Your GPA and class rank are both too low for top schools. UMich would be a high reach as they consider GPA to be the most important factor. In general, you need to be within the top 10% to be accepted by these top schools.

@billcsho “too low” is harsh. Twinshk2, I’m sorry but I wouldn’t listen to this guy^ and get discouraged for no reason. Gpa varies relative to the difficulty of the school + teachers. You have very good EC’s and SAT score but somewhat low gpa, therefore I would focus on 1 school on your list and apply ED. Then I’d say you would have a very good chance. For RD chances, chifan23’s post in probably very accurate.
Just so you know, the lowest person that got accepted into UMichigan RD from our school had a 3.36 weighted, 25 ACT. So don’t worry, and good luck!

I also know a music major with ACT 25 at UMich. Just finding a specific case proof nothing. Look at the admission statisitc for the big picture. UMich put GPA as the most important factor for admission on CDS. The average admission uwGPA was 3.85 last year and 21% of enrolled freshmen has GPA 4.0. The mid 50 ACT score is 30-33. If you have some hooks such as athlete recruitment, music instrument performance major, etc, then you should not compare to the average admission statistics. I agree that GPA would depend on the school, that why I mentioned the class rank also.
By the way, Ross pre-admission at UMich has a ~15% admission rate. The overall admission rate for UMich from OOS was 27% last year and would be near 20% this year.

Yes @billcsho is correct in that Ross is VERY difficult to get into OOS. The ONLY kid from my high school in IL (top 5 in state) has a 35 ACT and 3.92 UW GPA. Michigan in general, however, is easier to get into. Since you’re interested in business, apply to the school as an undecided freshman and try to transfer into Ross Sophomore year. That’s your best bet. Ross takes a lot of Sophomore transfers because they don’t directly admit a lot of students as Freshman. I still think UMich RD for you is a Low Reach and maybe High Match. Applying ED at UMich will definitely help your chances though. Best of luck.

Notre Dame is a high reach and one of the toughest schools is the country for undergraduate business school admissions. Harder than Michigan which is hard enough. @chifan23 Notre Dame is not a state school.

@twinshk2 Colgate, Hamilton and Colby dont have business majors. You should major in Econ and double in either English or Math depending on the type of Econ program. No matter where you go that combination is better than an undergraduate business degree.

@chifan23 UMich does not have ED but EA. However, they still defer a lot as they receive so many EA applications while only ~1/3 of admission are from EA. So if you are not the top candidates, the chance would not be higher as you would be deferred to the RD pool anyway.

I just looked up my school profile and I’m actually in top 1/3rd for GPA, if that does anything. I will be trying to get into Michigan in general, and transfer afterwards.

Does anyone else have a chance list? I’d mostly agree with Chifan’s I suppose, other than NYU and BC.

Last thing, btw, probably going to apply early to NYU CAS.

I would go for stern. A 2270 could make up for your low gpa. A 2270 is about 120ish points above average, so i would give it a shot. Unless you really want to go to NYU and can 100% pay, I would go for Stern. As for the other schools:

UVA: High Reach OOs
NYU CAS: Low Match:
U Mich: Match
Boston College CSOM: High Match
Notre Dame: low reach
Colgate: Low reach
Emory: Match
Carnegie Mellon Tepper: High Reach
Tulane: safety
Colby: Not sure (low match?)
Hamilton: Reach
UChicago: very high reach
Cornell Hotel(for the past 2, a man can dream can’t he): high reach

@SternBusiness Are you sure? NYU CAS is honestly much more attractive than most of my safeties, which I didn’t put on here. I’ve looked on some other websites and they say CAS recruiting isn’t impacted too much, and you can sneak into Stern events as well. And I can still transfer. Is it really worth it to apply direct to Stern? I can probably pay, depending on family circumstances. What would you chance me as?

@twinshk2 Its more of a risk to apply to stern, but the reward is there. Their is a box, that you can check on the app that lets NYU consider you for CAS if your not goood enough for stern. NYU CAS is great, but it is just so expensive. If you could (or me) get into a public ivy (UCLA, U mich, UVA) I feel like the extra money saved is worth it. UVA is abot 51k, while NYU CAS is 71k. 80k is huge over 4 years.

If you aren’t sure about your financial circumstances, I would strongly advise against applying to NYU CAS for ED. It is a binding decision, and they are legendarily stingy with financial aid. You should not presume that you can transfer into Stern; it is far from a sure thing (quite difficult, in fact). You should have some UCs and CSUs as safeties. Don’t look at aggregate stats for Michigan or NYU, either. Michigan’s stats will include in-state students and all divisions. An Asian applicant to Ross from CA is not going to be judged under the same terms as a varsity football or basketball player from in-state. NYU doesn’t break its stats down by school, either, and so the scores needed for Stern are going to be very different from those for a Musical Theater student at Tisch or and Education major at Steinhard. If money is no object, and you think you’ll be happy at NYU CAS, go ahead, but do not pursue this strategy if you can’t answer both of those in the affirmative. If you want to get out of CA, add Pace (academic safety, where you could get a nice scholarship), American, Pitt, Temple, U. of Richmond, Lehigh, U. of Miami, et al, to your list.

@woogzmama @SternBusiness I just looked at the stats for ED NYU, and surprisingly the acceptance rate is the same as RD. I don’t know if applicant stats would be different, but that seems pretty discouraging.

@twinshk2 Yeah I think it all really depends on your high school though. I go to a really large competitive high school, so for me applying ED I am probably only going to compete with possibly a few others. RD I know for a fact that i am going to have to compete with 20-30 really talented kids, most with better grades than me. Plus, I want to know early whether or not I get in.

Idk if you know, but can you apply ED to a second school, after you apply ED1( (if you get in ed1 you can’t consider ed2 though) ? I have heard of it before but Im not sure how it works.
