I’m a high school senior, set to graduate in June of 2016. I’m a California resident and want to major in environmental science/studies. I have a UC GPA of 3.85 (from my grades for 10th and 11th). I received a 29 on my ACT, my lowest sub score was a 26 on math. I’m retaking the ACT in October though and I’m sure I can raise my math score to a 28, which would raise my total score, obviously. I took AP English last year and am taking AP English this year, along with AP Civics. I’m not enrolled in a math class at school, but am hoping to take a statistics class online through a CCC. I have been in band, GATE, and CSF all four years. Academic Decathlon and Musical Theatre for 11th and 12th. I will have very little community service hours and no work experience. I was Secretary for CSF my Junior year, and am Drum Major of my band and Club Captain for Academic Decathlon this year. I am a good writer, but I hate writing the personal statements, so in my opinion, the content will be about a 6/7 on a scale from one to ten. I know this is a lot of information, but I really don’t have any one to talk to about any of this, so please help! I just want some opinions and reassurance maybe. So chance me for UC Davis and Santa Barbara??
Since your UC GPA is below the average of 4.0+ at these schools, I would say they are a High Match/Low Reach. Your SAT is at their average but bumping it up a bit could help your chances. Your essays and EC’s will be taken into consideration and having a leadership position can help but I do not see any EC’s focused on the environment. I do not know what other schools you have on your list, but UCSC would be a good Match and they have an outstanding Environmental program. I would also look at UCR as another option.
Good Luck.
Some applicants with your stats are admitted to both schools every year so, there’s nothing wrong with applying. Just understand, they aren’t likely and plan accordingly.
I agree, UCSC and UCR are more likely options. Consider SDSU as well.
Good luck
