I plan on retaking the ACT but with a 26...what can I major in that'll get me accepted into UIUC?

Two things:

First, buy a couple ACT practice books and keep practicing until you get your score up above 30. Take a practice test, find what you get wrong, and then learn it until you get it right. This is especially true with Math and English. For science and reading, getting faster by practice is probably the best thing you can do. If you get your ACT score up in this way to where I specified, you’ve got a dam good shot of getting in. Right now I’d say your prospects are bleakish.

Second, your last question is so foolish that I am almost embarrassed acknowledge it. Let me explain: If you have a passion, then it is better that you major in that at some hole-in-the-ground university than something you don’t enjoy at Harvard (or UIUC in this instance). If, on the other hand, you genuinely don’t know what you’d like to major in, then climb an oak tree at sunrise, think long and hard, and don’t come down until you know what it is that makes your juices flow. If you cannot thing of anything before sunset, make some new experiences this summer that inform you of your interests.

Is this what you want to here? No, probably not. Will you follow this advice? Not likely. But if you want to be surrounded by corn-fields in 15 months…you know?

My ACT score is discouraging me from going into engineering but I will study harder for my next ACT exam. I honestly wish I had an oak tree to climb up and think about what to do with my future in terms of what I want to major in. I’ll take your words, think it over, and try to do better on the next attempt. Thank you.
