I just got my SAT scores back yesterday and they were lower than I'd hoped, so now I'm extremely worried about my chances at my top schools. Should I even apply / visit? I am a HS Junior.

Major does not impact your chances. You will be applying to LSA. It is hard to tell without knowing if your 4.0 GPA is weighted or not, or how many AP courses you took. Michigan looks at unweighted GPA and expect students to have taken the hardest course load a high school offers. Since you are ranked first in your class, I assume your GPA is unweighted and that you have taken several APs.

Michigan is not too hung up on standardized tests, but 1880 is on the low side. You definitely want to raise your score to 2000 or better.

If our 4.0 GPA is unweighted and you have taken many AP classes, and if you can raise your SAT to 2000, then Michigan would be a target if you are in-state. If you are OOS, Michigan is a reach, even you raise your SAT to 2200. For OOS applicants, Michigan is a reach, even for applicants with stellar credentials.

Thanks for your input @Alexandre I am OOS, unfortunately, and yes that is my unweighted GPA. My High School does not offer AP classes, which is why I opted for the Running Start Program where I take all my classes at the local community college. I will definitely work on that SAT score!

@jaebird I agree with the first poster, raising your SAT score is important but I don’t think you need 2200. I think anything 2000+ or even 1950+ should be fine. I am from OOS and know lots of people who have gotten in with a GPA like yours and a below 2000 SAT. Good luck!

I did not say jaebird needed a 2200. I said all OOS students should regard Michigan as a reach, even those with high scores on standardized tests.

@shk090 The mid 50 SAT from last year was 2050 to 2230 last year. So 2000+ would be fine for around 20% of admitted students that are mostly in state. It is still a lot of people as 20% means 1300+ students. Is it really competitive enough for an oos student would depend on how strong the rest of credential is.

Thank you @shk909 That’s good to hear!

Some correction. 20% of admitted students is 3000+ students. 20% of enrolled student is 1300+. Nevertheless I would not call it a match for oos if the stat is below the 75% due to the low acceptance rate.
