Asian Male, also had a relatively serious medical issue that was mentioned in all of my applications that affected some of my grades (thus low GPA and very light course load). Just to give you an idea, I was accepted to Purdue (College of Science) and University of Pittsburgh (Computer Science) so far.
Heya! Your extracurriculars look good. SAT is great too. Only thing a little low is your GPA, and your final AP scores. However as mentioned you have a good explanation for those, so I think you have good chance You’ll probably get accepted.
Chance me back?
I think you have a fair chance based on your ECs and SAT. However, there are a few things to keep in mind, especially as an applicant from California:
-
The mean GPA for the 2014 freshman class was 3.76 unweighted (per Common Data Set). The middle 50% ACT was 25/31.
-
The Common Data Set states that GPA is “very important,” whereas standardized test scores are “important” in admission decisions.
-
The Seattle Times recently reported that there was a 16% increase in applications overall this year, including an increase of 19% from nonresidents and an increase of 31% from California, for a class that will be about 2/3 Washington residents and 1/3 nonresidents.
Also, congratulations on Purdue and Pitt, both great schools and certainly a good sign for UW.
I would say unlikely – simply on basis of unweighted GPA. I believe UW values GPA more than SAT scores, for better or for worse. That said, if you have a compelling reason as to why your GPA was low, perhaps you’ll get in.
Definitely have a shot though. Depends on how strong your “soft” factors are (essays, recs, etc).
I think UW is going to be a reach because grades are weighted more heavily than standardized test scores, meaning that someone with a 4.0 and 1700 SAT will probably have a better chance of getting in than someone with a 3.1 and 2200. With that being said, nothing’s a done deal, and admissions officers are going to take extenuating circumstances into account.
You’ll hear back in a few weeks–hang in there. Best of luck!
A UW representative came down to our school for a college visit a few months ago and he told us that they take the difficulty/competitiveness of your high school into account. Hopefully that will have an impact on how they review my GPA.
also which major are u applying too?
