Hi, I’m an incoming senior from Southern California and I’d like to see my chances for schools I’d like to go to. I’m also looking for more target and safety schools:
UC GPA: 3.47
ACT: 28
EC’s:
- 4 years on Dance Team; 1st place soloist
- 3 years Yearbook; Photo Editor in 11th
- 4 years Key Club; awarded distinguished officer twice at the state level
- 4 years Medical Club; VP for two years
- 3 years Filipino Club
- Founded a community service project advocating for better sexual education
- 3 years on an outside of school dance team
Other:
International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate
Schools I’d like to Attend:
UCI
UCSB
UCLA
UCB
USC
NYU
U of Chicago
Columbia
U of Hawaii Manoa
Boston University
U chicago, UCLA, UCB, USC, and columbia are out of reach with your GPA and relatively low test score. Get your ACT up and you might have a chance but they will be reaches regardless due to your GPA.
Your UC GPA is low for all the UC’s on your list. Your ACT score is within range for UCI only. I think you need to re evaluate your list and aim slightly lower. Here are some stats on the UC admit rates based on UC GPA just to give you an idea:
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:
UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 15%
UCSB: 14%
UCI: 13%
UCSC: 59%
UCR: 78%
UCM: 92%
UCSC/UCR and UCM look like your only UC target schools. I would look at some Cal States such as Cal Poly Pomona, Fullerton, Northridge, Sac State, Sonoma to name a few that would be more in your target range if you are in-state CA.
The only match school on your list is Univ of Hawaii.
What is your intended major?
You should start with a safety school or two. What is your local Cal State? You get priority as an applicant to your local in-service area Cal state.

Once you have 1-2 safety schools on your list, then find some Match schools. University of Hawaii looks like one Match school. I would add UC Merced and UC Riverside as 2 more Match schools along with several of the Cal states I mentioned.
You can look up Freshman profiles on the UC website, to see where you stand in terms of GPA and test scores along with common datasets for these and other schools. You want to be at or above the 50th percentile in GPA and test scores for the best chances at these schools.
Post your intended major and also how much your parents can pay towards your college education so posters can make more suggestions for some good schools to consider.
