Chance of acceptance to UT Austin?

So I am a student living in Wisconsin who plans on applying to UT Austin very soon. UT Austin is a rather selective public school and it is especially selective for out of state students such as myself due to certain Texas laws.

I am concerned with my chance of getting accepted, mainly because all the research I have done does not really help me. I was wondering if any of you could give me a good idea of my chances.

My GPA (weighted) is 4.01, un-weighted it is about 3.97 (I only have on AP class done so far, so not really a difference there)

My highest ACT composite score is 31, with a 10 in the Writing

Unfortunately, my school does not rank students. If I had to estimate, I would say I am in the top 10% of my class.

As far as extra-curricular activities:

I have been a member of the high school band for all 4 years. I play the clarinet

I have been a member of the Business Club since junior year

I and two other friends founded the Investment Club in our school junior year, we have about 30 members this year

On top of this, I plan on having two letters of recommendations from teachers. One is already written, I am waiting on the other.

As far as the essays for the application go, I guess I could say they are pretty good. I am a good writer so I am not concerned about that.

With all this said, can anybody give me somewhat of any idea on my chances?

Thanks in advance!

UT puts a lot of weight on class ranking more than anything else, in addition your EC doesn’t really stand out. Your ACT scores are really well but compared to other out of state students that are accepted it’s average. Also, 75% of incoming freshmen slots are reserved for automatically admitted Texas students, therefore the other 25% would be extremely competitive.

Questions for you:

What prospective major?

Also can I assume that cost is not a deterrent? And that your family can and will afford full cost of OOS?

Leadership positions in band?

I plan on going into the Radio-Television-Film program at the Moody College of Communication

Cost is not necessarily a deterrent because I believe I can get in-state tuition if I can obtain residency after a year in Texas. If everything goes as planned I will only pay OOS tuition for the first year.

The band doesn’t really have leadership positions, so no. However, I am one of the two seniors in the clarinet section.

You generally cannot get residency after becoming a student unless your parents move to Texas and they take up Texas residency. Now, certain scholarships may waive out of state tuition if you qualify for those, but if you start as OOS, you will remain all always OOS until you graduate.

The year living in Texas in order to gain residency for tuition/admission purposes must be spent not enrolled in a college or university. Find the rules at <a href=“College For All Texans: Residency Information”>College For All Texans: Residency Information; (“Residency Rules Jan 2012”). The section that applies in your situation is 21.24(a)(2).
