Last semester I barely received an F in IB Biology III. I have been nervous ever since. I was wondering what my chances are on being rescinded?

This was the only F I have ever received and my grades for my other classes that semester were: 2 A's, 2 B's, and 2 C's. I am taking a very rigorous senior schedule since I am in IB. My grades this semester are all better than they were last year, and I am expecting a B or C in IB Biology III this semester.

I have written an explanation to the office of admissions and am waiting to hear back, but I am so nervous.

What do you all think?

From what I am aware of, the college doesn’t like to rescind acceptances, and a very very small number get rescinded every year. It’s good that you wrote to them, definetely shows your commitment to the school and I definetely think they will realize that. Plus, IB is insane. It’s not offered at my school, but I have a friend in Miami whos taking some, and it makes AP look like a hopscotch lol.
But good luck, and if you dont mind to share your results when you hear back?

Thank you for your reply. I would agree IB has been very difficult.

When I hear back I will definitely post the results.

Any other opinions?

I have to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where this info is coming from. Last year FSU rescinded high school seniors who had any D’s or F’s on their final transcripts. Even a single D senior year led to a rescind letter.

It may help that you wrote FSU. And if this semester is so much better that your final grade is a C, you have a chance. Anything is possible. The problem is, taking a full load of IB and AP classes as a senior and getting a D shows the university that you might struggle with a full college schedule. Especially with the added stress of living away from home, adjusting to campus life, classes that meet only 2-3 times a week but cover more info than HS classes that meet every day.

I have to be honest with you and tell you to have back up plans. Here is a link from just last fall. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/florida-state-university/525469-rescinded.html?highlight=FSU+rescinded. This student graduated with honors, but had a D on the transcript from his/her last semester.

The honesty is appreciated, and I have prepared a backup plan. However, I am still determined to do whatever I can before resigning myself to what may happen.

Agreed. Work your hardest, improve your grade, talk to you teacher. Do it all and fight for your spot. It might help that it was not the final semester, and maybe if you show you brought it up… Final question. Does your school’s transcripts and report cards show semester grades as final with a 0.5 credit? Or does your school not report a credit until the final grade, with the final grade and a 1.0 credit? (ie, semester grades are averaged and only the final grade with 1 credit is used for graduation credit, GPA etc.)

Grades go in as .5 for each semester on our transcripts. The average of two quarters are used to calculate each semester.

Wow, not gonna lie Sunnyflorida, that thread from last fall terrified me a little lol.
I did not research rescinded acceptances, I only heard or maybe I read a thread from not to long ago that rescinded letters are rare, but I’m glad you brought that to my attention!!
Are there any statistics available that tell how many people have been rescinded?

Yes the previous thread did worry me as well. However, I wonder what her schedule was like and what classes those Ds were in. Since I am in IB I have a pretty rigorous schedule especially with my extracurriculars. Also her poor grades were in their final semester preventing them from speaking with an admissions officer on a possible deal. I am hoping FSU will work with me and allow me to show my improvement this semester. Fingers crossed!

Great news!! After corresponding with FSU I’ve been informed I won’t be rescinded for one poor grade (most likely due to the IB curriculum). However I cannot afford any more grades below a C. Thank you all for your discussion and I hope future students will learn from the lessons of those on this board and not slack off their senior year! I am so glad I am STILL a nole!

Lucky you! Hopefully this little scare will be enough to prevent you from losing your focus during your first year in college. Many students enjoy college life too much and end up with less than stellar grades.

A few tips: GO TO CLASS, read the class syllabus and make note of important due dates and how your grade will be calculated, contact the professor or TA if you need help before it is too late, and take advantage of extra credit opportunities.

same thing happened to me and AP chem. I got saved by the skin of my teeth.

Great advice cybermom!

Happy to help! Don’t forget to check your email and Bb account frequently and you should be good to go.
