Chance of getting in RD after Deferral

Hi, so I just got deferred, and it was a big letdown. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they believe my chances of getting in RD. Please be honest.

ACT: 32
GPA: 3.4 unweighted -- school does not weight GPA, majority of classes are honors, AP, IB
High School: super-competitive, ranked one of the top in the region. Has good relations with WashU, has lots of yearly acceptances
Rank: school does not rank
Senior Year Schedule: IB Economics, AP AB Calculus, IB English HL, IB Spanish Language, Anatomy & Physiology

Current Senior Year Grades (they received a mid-term report, upon request):
IB Econ: A
Anatomy: A-
AP Calc: A
IB English: B+
IB Spanish: B+

Extracurriculars:
Interned for a campaign for a state senator (before he had ever been a senator)
Founded a community service organization that allows volunteers to mentor underprivileged kids. Also, I still run this program as president.
On the exec. board for an application-only community service program at my school
Volunteer weekly for local first aid squad (over 100 hours yearly)
Worked over a summer at a media firm
Member of: Model Congress & Model UN
Interned at a GP's office over the summer, helped with filing and watched several select procedures
Have written for my school newspaper for four years
Went on a 3-week immersion to Spain where I spoke only Spanish
3 sport athlete (varying sports for varying years due to injuries, schedule, etc.)

Other:
Double-legacy, both of my parents attended Wash U undergrad. They give money yearly to the school and are involved in local fundraising.
I visited on campus, had an interview with an admissions rep., interviewed/had a scheduled meeting with a dean of A&S, and both went very well.
I thought my essay was very good (no supplements for Wash U), I showed it to several people, my English teacher included, who all liked it very much.
I was a little unsure if I managed to get everything properly into my Common App, so I emailed them my resum

i’m in the same boat as you: deferred probably due to a low GPA. i’m actually really surprised of your decision given your parents’ relationship with the school. by being deferred we weren’t good enough to be accepted but not bad enough to be outright rejected…so they’re going to take another look. not sure of the exact numbers but the odds get even worse for RD even after being deferred. it was probably a reach school to begin with and will probably remain as such

I would stay positive!

Your stats look to be in WashU’s range. I also believe you have a great demonstrated interest in the school, something I KNOW WashU likes to see. If you really interviewed with the Dean, that’s awesome.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the GPA. Though, with your strong extracurriculars and demonstrated interest, coupled with your familial connections, I would say that if you play your cards right, you could be cautiously optimistic about RD.

Talk to your counselor about updating WashU and continuing to show such high interest. Make sure you kick butt for your fall grades (it seems you were on the right track at midterms), as that could really be a deciding factor. It seems to me that they deferred you to see further information, not a reason to lose hope.

So be proactive but also forge ahead. Work hard on other applications too. Good luck!
