I’m really interested in going into Economics with the pursuit of a Finance career (ex. investment banking, consulting, fund managing) and I’m a little unsure about whether it would be appropriate to stress applying to LACs which are naturally quite good at Economics or whether I should apply to the universities and BSchool Finance/Econ programs for recruitment. Any thoughts?

Bump. Any input regarding the question in my last post would be highly appreciated!

As sad as it is being Asian works against you

What school do you go to in Washington? I livwe here to and I’m a freshman at Cascade High School.

I sent you a PM!

Another question to any posters: Do you think my chances will drop drastically if my GPA drops to a high 3.8? My GPA drop happened only in junior year so honestly I have a downtrend in GPA - which I know colleges dislike especially at the upper tier. But in reality it’s difficult to manage the current 6 AP classes I’m taking along with my ECs I’m committed to. Thoughts?

Bump. Ignore the GPA drop question. I’ve resolved that my grades will not drop below a 3.9 (hopefully a 3.91 won’t be such a big turn-off to colleges).

Anyone else like to chance or possibly offer some advice on how to strengthen my application seeing as my 3.9 is a tad low 3.9?

danggg idk about harvard but ur ecs look great, lots of leadership, do well on the act and i dont think you’ll have a problem getting into any of those

The GPA/ranking could definitely hurt you unless you’re at a very competitive high school

Well the reason my GPA is low compared to many others is that not a single AP class in my school is curved and neither is class rank. I’ll still end up with a 3.9 and be in the top 5% of my class, but if class rank was curved (which by the way I’m organizing a group to petition for at the district level) then I’d be number 1 by a long-shot. The school itself isn’t competitive (we rarely send kids to the Ivy Leagues) but without curves on classes and AP grade bumps (if you get a 5, then teachers bump your grade blah blah blah) it becomes difficult to get a 4.0 on 6 AP classes and an advanced business class. Nevertheless I don’t want to make excuses; I could’ve done better and I just hope I can convey the other aspects of my resume to colleges. Thanks so much for your input!

You are set. Are you doing Wharton though or CAS? I think with Wharton no one can ever be too sure. Also are you doing ED?

btw what is your weighted GPA?

I’m definitely doing CAS, but it’s after a really really long-thought process. And at the moment I’m fighting over whether I want to apply ED to Columbia or CAS Penn (both of which are my top choices). Sadly my school doesn’t weight GPA so I have no idea and the calculation is a pain. Though I certainly estimate (on a 5.0 scale) that it’ll be somewhat decent considering I’ve taken 7 AP classes (I’ve gotten a few A-'s and a B)

@OP, you’re not first generation. As long as your parents went to college then that isn’t a hook. First gen in the eyes of a college is if neither of your parents (or in some cases, one of your parents) did not go to college. Since they have, you’re unhooked.

Of course that doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance at these schools, i’m just saying that you can’t rely on a hook that doesn’t exist.
