Chance the New Guy! Penn, Harvard, Chicago and more!! Will Chance Back!

Hey everyone! So this is my very first thread on CC and, considering I'm wrapping up my junior year, I'm pretty psyched out regarding college admissions this fall! So before I post the stats here's a little bit of background info on what I want in a college:

I'm 100% completely determined that I want an undergraduate degree in Economics. I spent some time debating between that and business, but I realized where my passion lies. I love math and business - especially finance and stocks - so I feel that Economics is where I'll best be placed for my career and my interests. So of all the colleges I post ahead, note that if the university has a business school I will NOT be applying to it, but rather to its College of Arts and Sciences or any such equivalent.

You are good on all fronts, but many of the schools that you listed are reaches for everyone.

Chance me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1504043-new-member-looking-chances.html</a></p>

You have a solid shot at all these schools. Being asian works against you, luckily you’re indian not east asian (as terrible as that is, it’s the truth). Your GPA and SAT are both fine, I would say you don’t even need to take ACT unless you truly think you can get a 36 on it. Solid ECs, but nothing particularly special. You’ve done everything you can, but admissions at many of these schools is still, for lack of a better word, a crapshoot. Chances:

Harvard: High Reach
Chicago: Low reach
Penn: Reach
Northwestern: Low reach
UC Berkeley: Match
Columbia: Low reach
NYU: Low match
Michigan: Low match
Maryland - College Park: High safety
Minnesota - Twin Cities: Safety
University of Washington: Match
Claremont McKenna:High match/Low reach
Swarthmore: Low reach (being male helps you at the LACs)

Chance back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1508050-chances-science-undergrad-new-post.html</a></p>

Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, Swarthmore: Reach
Penn: Low Reach
NW: Decent chances
CMC: Good chances

GREAT chances at other colleges

“Swarthmore: Low reach (being male helps you at the LACs)”
Not true for Swarthmore, Amherst or Williams

Harvard: High Reach
Chicago: Mid reach
Penn: Low Reach if CAS, High Reach if Wharton
Northwestern: High Match/Low reach
UC Berkeley: Match
Columbia: Mid/High reach
NYU: Low match
Michigan: Low match
Maryland - College Park: High safety
Minnesota - Twin Cities: Safety
University of Washington: Low match/safety (since you’re in state but I think is a fairly competitive public)
Claremont McKenna:High match/Low reach
Swarthmore: Low reach (being male helps you at the LACs)

Harvard: High reach
Upenn: Low Reach
NYU: Match

Try writing good essays and you’ll have a great shot!
(I just chanced you for schools I’m aware of)

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1506757-chances-wharton.html</a></p>

Harvard, Penn, Columbia: I’d say reach
Michigan, Chicago: Low reach
Minnesota: match

Those are the only ones I can really chance on based on some of seniors I know who applied there

Michigan and Minnesota are safety schools for OP.

How can Harvard, Penn and Columbia reach but Michigan, University of Chicago low reach?

I thought Harvard, Penn, Columbia are hard ones to get in compare to Michigan, Chicago unless I’m not aware of the basics here.

UChicago admit rate: 8.8%

Well it’s worth noting that Chicago is considered a top 5-7 overall university in the country along with the fact that its admissions percentage has been steadily declining over the past few years. Who’s to say it won’t be around that 6-7% admissions rate next year? You’re right about Michigan on the other hand; it’s not nearly as competitive as Harvard, Penn, Columbia and Chicago. It’s still a fantastic school for all sorts of analytic majors!

i think you are in at all the schools which do not have the astericks next to them as being preferred lol… out of the schools that you prefer, i cant say i see a weakness in ur application… but those schools reject perfect applicants… i still think you will get into 1 or 2 of them… those are crapshoots obviously… but i do think you have a better chance than the typical applicant

You’re probably right haha! I’d still say that I have a better shot at Claremont than I do Swarthmore, so that’s probably the only exception to what you said. Thanks for your insight!

I think you could easily get into almost all of those schools. However, you can’t be sure with Columbia, Harvard, UPenn, and UChicago. But I think you’ll get into at least 2 of those 4 top schools. Good luck! :)

Harvard: Reach
Chicago: Low reach
Penn: Low reach
Northwestern: Low reach
UC Berkeley: High Match
Columbia: Low reach
NYU: High match
Michigan: Match to low match (for LSA)
Minnesota - Twin Cities: Low match/safety

Bump 10char

Quick question: I was reading the comments and I noticed Neuromajor mentioned being Asian works against you…how so, and how much does race have an effect?

Unfortunately, race does play a factor in admissions. Studies have found that based on test scores, someone who is Asian needs a higher score than someone who is Caucasian, in order to look the same for admissions. In turn, someone who is African American needs even lower test scores to look the same for admissions. Here’s the link:

http://blog.press.princeton.edu/2011/12/05/is-there-a-bias-against-college-applications-from-asian-students/</a></p>

It is an unfortunate fact that race even is a factor in admissions.

Nevertheless it’s difficult for any race to get into a top 5 to 7 school. Don’t fret too much. It’s much more important to colleges that you convey that you’re a unique individual with something interesting to bring to the table!

Hey thanks for chancing me :)
