I mean, really. Who are we to judge someone’s chances? Plus, they make me feel inadequate when they’re like “OMG… i dunno if I’ll get in… is my 2400 SAT and millions of extracurriculars good enough???” Helloooo? Wanting an ego boost much?

Haha, I was thinking that exact thing just a few minutes ago.

No, I'm not talking to you asc1991 and Poseur.

Oh wait I am

Lol I mean it's fun to hear what people think. >__> Of course no one can predict accurately. But there's something addictive about hearing people's opinions...!

Yeah, I get you. You apologized in the title of your thread, too, so you're forgiven. :)

asc1991 is way too perfect though. Not forgiven

Yes, people's opinions are addicting... when they are saying that you are fantabulous at life and will definitely get in to the college of your choice.

They are a stupid reality of this board. Most of us just ignore them and wait for legitimate questions/issues.

You'll notice current students rarely post in chances threads.

There is a forum specific for those threads but no one every seems to care to keep chances crap where it belongs.

well i thought i'd get different responses here than from people I know. but i guess not all of the replies are honest or sincere. i posted it here because i saw that others did it and my friend did one too. seemed like most people were. honest mistake. if you want people to post them in the right place, you should tell them directly rather than complaining about them in a different thread.
and uhh perfect? don't act so sure. but I'll take it as a compliment.

lastly... ego boost? Just because YOU feel "inadequate" when you read them doesn't mean everyone does them to make people feel like crap. If I wanted an ego boost this isn't exactly the first place I'd look.

It's not really a big deal, just don't expect many responses and don't expect them to come from anyone but other high school juniors and seniors.

I was kidding, you're cool. Else I wouldn't have posted in your thread :)

And I didn't realize that the chances threads themselves annoy people this much, I was just commenting that a lot of people have ridiculously awesome resumes (like you) and would obviously have a shot anywhere.

I think most of the people openly displaying their "qualifications" are
A) exaggerating B)looking to impress/intimidate.
Frankly, I don't care what other people think my chances are unless they're the admissions officer at the school I want to go to.

asc1991, you took my and other's posts out of context. I never insinuated that people post chance threads to "make others feel like crap", just that you post them to make yourself look good. I also never made mention (and from what I've read, neither did anyone else) of insincere responses... I believe we were saying they were basically worthless because they aren't admissions counselors' opinions.

letitbe18 is pretty spot on, in my opinion.

I think there are two different types of chance threads:

1) those from people with decently competitive stats who are unsure of whether or not they stand a chance. They want to know if they're reaching too high by applying to a school like Brown or if they legitimately have a shot at admission and if it's a good shot.

2) people with ungodly high stats, perfect sats, valedictorian, professional musicians, etc who honestly think it's necessary for them to post a chances thread. These people are just looking for an ego boost and to intimidate those who they consider their competition.

The first time of chance threads are ok and can be beneficial to applicants looking at where to improve their applications. The second kind needs to stop.

I agree with Hippo. I think I belong in the first category, but I resisted the urge to post a chances thread. Even if I had, trust me, it wouldn't have been for any kind of ego boost, just for some honest feedback to help me make some decisions in the application process.
But people with fantastic, perfect stats... I don't know why they bother posting those threads because, well, of course they have a great shot!
