Hi my name is Richard and I am a junior in an above par high school. I have just taken the new SAT and I believe the score is around 2200-2250. I have also taken the chinese test and have obtained an 800 in that. My first question is, since i took the writing test along with the SAT 1, I would only need to take the SAT 2c test right? I am pretty confident I can get an 800 in that as well. Now here is the problem; my GPA is very low, perhaps around the 2.8-3.2 range. I have no AP or honors and perhaps no afterschool activities. Although i do live in CA, what would b my chance to get in UCLA or berk?

I have just researched a bit and have noticed that there is an option where I can enter with my test scores only. My question would be that is my SAT scores high enough to get in? If not, what other alternatives do I have?

only 1.5% of poeple with a ~2.8-3.2 get into Ucla. UC's put more weight on GPA and not as much on SAT's. These are probably poeple recruited for sports. You should try for some of the lower UC's. And yes if you take the math2c you do not need the 1c for UC's.

took psat and prep scoreswhich showed that 2200 sounds about right. maybe 2250-2300 by my last try which is in november. Come on, let me in ;/. I rpomise i won't be so lazy ever again...sigh.

And oh please more comments/posts . I really regret spending so much time on the comp now. Wish I can turn back the clocks....

I didn't think there was a test score only option anymore. Is there? Unless sthere is such a loophole, you won't get into LA or Cal and wouldn't get into most lower UCs either. If your school offers honors and AP classes and you didn't take at least some of them, you're pretty out of the running. Even if you had gotten straight As in regular courses.

The UCs are designed to accept the top 12% of CA high school grads, they are the students in honors and AP classes.

Your best bet is a Cali community college for 2 years, use your potential and take honors classes, and then transferring to LA or Cal.

Also SATII scores count more than SATI and you do need 3. If you got 800 on Chinese and are not Chinese, they'll be impressed. If you are Chinese, they won't.

You can still get into the UCs with high test scores and the minimun gpa, which I think is 2.8, but you won't have your choice of campuses, and most likely will not get into the most selective ones. Riverside or Merced, and if you're lucky, Santa Cruz.

zagat, will they seriously check everyone
s ethnicity to see if they are chinese or not if they take SATII Chinese and gets 800? obviously, i understand what you
re trying to say, but do they really check the applicant`s identity?

"Eligibility by Examination Alone is a third possible pathway to UC eligibility, requiring a minimum SAT score of 1400 on the SAT I or 31 on the ACT, plus a total score of 1760 on three SAT II exams."

taken directly from ucla. And yes sadly I am chinese ;/. But I have just arrved in CA when I was in in year 9. Although when I was 7 I was in Hawaii, I only spent 2 years there before I moved out. I was n a british school in Malaysia but its definately ok to say its english standard is not up to par with the ones in the states. In fact, my school put me in an independent school when I first came. Maybe that can be an excuse? But is my test score high enough to get in UCLA alone though if I apply undecided?

there is no excuse, colleges are ruthless. (that's my opinion.) try to find a shield to block their swords, they'll use cannons to massacre you.
i also got rejected from UCLA 1400 (chinese, being in northamerica 6 (too long lol) years 600V) 2110 SAT II, with 630 bio(downfall)
4.0 gpa
international

Eligibility just means you will be considered. GPA eligibility is moving from 2.8 to 3.0 next year. Those below the 3.0 won't even be considered unless they have a 1400 which will get them considered but rejected with below a 3.0.

I've never been this direct in a post, but you will not get into Cal or UCLA. You need to get real and look at serious prospects. You will have a lot more sway at private colleges with low GPA and high scores. Get your record in the best shape possible and choose schools where you have a shot.

Your chances for UCLA and/or Berkeley are low, as GPA is the greatest criteria of admission. The SATII in Chinese looks sorta bad to some colleges, cuz they will suspect you are Chinese (lets face it, very few non Chinese people take SATII chinese). Make sure they know why your GPA is so low in your essays, and u have a shot maybe.
