Chancellor's Nominee Scholarship

We were also in the early November timeframe – something like Nov 18th her scholarship app had to be in…no interview, she already has full tuition though.

Sorry hgblue – I’m sure you are a great kid!

hgblue - sorry to hear you didn’t get an interview

My son got confirmatin of application submission 12/7 (notificatin letter on nomination was late November). We are still waiting!!!

I got my full tuition scholarship (Honors, not Chancellor Nominee) in mid-November, and my postmark date was therefore in late-November.

I have literally heard NOTHING from them since I got my letter and application instructions!!! I didn’t get a confirmation that they received it, and I haven’t gotten an acceptance email or rejection letter…

I haven’t really thought about it much until now, but I’m starting to become worried. I’ll understand if they rejected me, but I’d be pretty annoyed if they just did not get my application…

I would appreciate some advice!

Good luck to all those that are applying now!!! :)

ferrariman–Call the Honors College and ask if your application was received; they are very nice. Your application was due during the holidays. The end of November is not really that long ago.

If you read the thread on this topic from last year, there was no word for many people until March or so, and interviews were still being offered at that time. I think the message is, no news is good news, you are still in the running, if you were eliminated, you are notified as that happens, if not, you are still in the pool. That thread is a chronicle of frustration and waiting, punctuated with rejection and only the occasional piece of good news. Around here we have decided to put it out of our minds for the moment and wait upon events. Odds are against all these fantastic kids–best of luck to all. It truly is a case of, it’s an honor to be nominated. Hgblue And pamom, bummer but still fantastic to have full tuition.

Does Pitt bring kids out one-by-one for the interview, or do they bring them in groups? Is it just an interview or is there more to the agenda? Do they pay for travel expenses? Though it might be a small comfort, at least being notified of rejection frees families to plan a campus visit on one of the honors days. We are already on a tight schedule with some scholarship weekends and honors program visits already on the calendar in March and April. We also are not counting on the full ride, but would prefer to make one visit rather than two, because of scheduling and travel costs.

Just answered my own question by reading the old thread–looks like travel is not covered, interviews are just that, and are conducted one-by-one. The only other thing that would be good to know would be by when winners are notified. No one posted as having been notified that they won, even by April 5. I saw they interviewed about 60 kids.

I have a question. Are the OSS students receiving $12,000 and the ISS $2,000 this year? If so, based upon current tuition, that is grossly unfair for PA residents. Granted, tution hasn’t been set yet for 2011-12, but assuming that there is no increase, it would appear as though ISS may be getting the short end of the stick.

Last year ISS received $2,000 and OSS $10,000. When you subtracted those amounts the ISS students paid slightly less than the OSS for tuition - which would be fair since ISS residents are paying PA taxes and Pitt is a state sponsored school receiving PA tax dollars.

This year, OSS tuition is $23,732 - minus the $10,000 award - total tuition would be $13,732.

ISS tuition is $14,076 - minus the $2,000 award - total tuition would be $12,076.

If OSS are actually receiving $12,000 this year and ISS still the $2,000 amount, the OSS tuition will be cheaper than what ISS pay - OSS at $11,732 and ISS $12.076. I’m going to have to assume that Pitt will have to set the 2011-12 OSS tuition at a rate that would be at least $11,000 more than PA residents. Stay tuned…

I’m wondering if that $12,000 OOS merit scholarship is specific to engineering students. In years past, every engineering student (both IS and OOS) received a departmental scholarship. (I don’t know how much that was, since D1 isn’t in engineering) Last year, I noted the majority of OOS scholarship students mentioned a $10K scholarship, but a couple did talk about a $12K scholarship. In other words, did Pitt combine the $10K OOS merit with a departmental $2K to generate a $12K scholarship?

Excellent point QuiteType. That would make sense.

For those who received the $12,000, were you accepted into the School of Engineering? Any A&S students who received the $12,000 out there?

DS received a $4,000/year scholarship from engineering (a few years back) but I assume it was the standard award for all engineering students since it was the same amount engineering students mentioned.

1480 sat 96 wgpa and oos (ny). I got accepted to swanson engineering last week, and recieved honors college invitation and grad school guarantee today. Is it likely that I will receive some scholarship?

I say you look good, but there’s no way to tell for sure. Have to wait and see. Fingers crossed!

Bumping this up and still asking, has anyone who applied for the Chancellor’s Scholarship been notified that they are being interviewed?

^^ Haven’t heard back about Chancellor’s interviews. Was informed that my S may hear back either way in Feb, perhaps by 15th.

Are there different levels of scholarship because my DD just got a letter today inviting her to apply for the Chancellors Scholarship but it wasn’t for $10,000 - it says it’s for a full ride.

Chancellor’s Scholarship is full tuition and room and board for four years. The whole enchilada :)

Jerzgrlmom,
The chancellor’s is, as Titanmom said, a full ride scholarship awarded on the basis of the application your daughter has been invited to submit. Congrats to her! There are other levels of scholarship which are awarded based on the student’s application to Pitt; these go by different names: Honors Tuition, Honors Challenge, Chancellor’s Nominee and probably others as well. These seem to range from $2,000 to full tuition. Notification about these has come either with the invitation to compete for the Chancellor’s, and also separately for some. There also seem to be departmental scholarships for certain majors or schools within Pitt.
Good luck to your d with her Chancellor’s application.

Thanks for the explanation. I was just confused by the different amounts being mentioned. It makes sense now. Different amounts, different scholarships… I’m glad my DD added Pitt to her list and am looking forward to visiting in March.

It’s nice to see you in the Pitt forum, jerzgrlmom. I hope you and your D enjoy the visit!
