I would guess it is probably an attempt to retain “the state’s top seniors” and prevent them from leaving to attend elsewhere. There will probably be UW students there who skipped out on a school like NU/WUSTL/Ivy for Madison or something like that and are loving it.
I am completely guessing, but it has to be some sort of promotional event designed for retention of some of their top candidates they admitted.

hi im a senior in high school soon to be freshman at uw madison. I also received an email from uw madison just like this for the chancellors scholarship and Im wondering if you remember from 2 years ago if getting that email meant that I have received the scholarship or if i am supposed to attend the reception to find out if i have received the scholarship. I am very anxious/excited because I dont know if i got it or not! thanks.
