Hello, just curious to know what all jobs people were assigned if they indicated they would accept a position for Chancellor's Student Aide? These were put up on PAWS last week.

I will be an office worker. Did anybody get the library?

so what office will you be working in tigerbound?

I am going to set my job preferences tomorrow. Does anyone know what the better assignments are? I am thinking about making the computer lab my first choice because it seems like 10% work and 90% Facebook.

does anyone know if we can defer our chancellor’s student aide job?
i.e. if we don’t want it this semester/year, can we get it back next semester/year?

thanks all

I’ll be working for the Eng. Dept.

It really depends on what professor you get assigned to.

You might end up doing paperwork, research, or working in a lab.

I’m pretty sure you can defer it. I knew I guy that wanted to rush for a Fraternity, which basically left him no time to work. I think after his freshman year, he came back to working a research lab.

And everybody that’s new to this program: keep in mind that you can always ask to change your position or place of work if you don’t like it. I worked in a water quality lab for my freshman year. I wanted to do something that was more biology and medically related, so I found a professor and asked if I could work in their lab. I was transferred over there the next semester.

A professor (if they have a position open) would be more than excited to have you work in their lab because they wouldn’t have to pay you out of their grant money.

I got an job working with the Registar’s office.

where do you see if you have been awarded this?

If any of you are interested in working in a biological research lab involving immunology, macrophages, a microscopic fungal parasite (microsporidians), and possibly working with fruit flies, send me a PM.

I got word today that my PI will be looking for more freshies or sophies this summer and next year to start working in our lab since most of the people in our lab will be moving on to other things after next year. So, if this seems up your alley, you can get a leg up on the competition and see if you can get a spot for next year in our lab.

I can’t make guarantees, but at the least you can talk to my PI and see about working there.

To see your job posting, go to Financial Aid in PAWs and click on “Work Study/Chancellor’s Student Aide.” My job hasn’t been posted yet. :(

How many hours per week do they make you work?

Depends on where you work, I would think. All places you work are going to be flexible with your hours. They do know you are a college student and studies will come first over the job. If you work somewhere like an office or a research lab, you are looking at fitting in hours before or just around 5pm, because that’s when things start to shut down. If you working at the library though, you can schedule hours at night or what have you.

I’ve worked typically anywhere from 7 hours a week (when I was taking a 19 hour course load) to 14-15 hours a week. The max you are allowed to work is 20 hours a week. I have great flexibility in that I can come and go as I please. As in if I have a huge test the next day, I may only come in for a little bit or not come in at all. But I’ve also come in when I didn’t have to come in either, i.e. on weekends to run an experiment.

I got my job posting today. It looks like I’ll be working as a computer lab assistant (second choice) in the foreign language lab.

How much do they pay you per hour?

It depends on how much you work.

You can only work up to 20 hrs. a week and receive up to $775 a semester, which totals to $1,550 a year.

Most places start you off at minimum wage and then increase it each semester.

But as tigerbound said, you can only earn at maximum $1550 a year (Chancellor’s) or $2000 (Work-study).
