I thought my chances threads were long gone, but I'm back after a nice little slice of humble pie at Bowling Green. I was there for a week and was absolutely miserable. I know that sticking it out for the semester would have been a better choice, but I don't think I could've made it that long. I was driving myself crazy. So here I am again, still with my H.S. grades...

It was too far away from home...about a 7 hour drive. Of course I knew that going in, but once I got out there, it felt so much further. Plus Penn State - U. Park is my main goal and I figured going to a branch campus or an in-state school would be a cheaper and more efficient (as far as credit transfers) way to get there.

You may be able to get into WVU, Pittsburgh Johnstown, and Marshall University. They're definitely worth a shot. If not, you can always just spend a year at a local CC, as I did, and get your grades up. You will definitely get into those schools after a good year at a CC.

I got into Marshall for Fall of 08 but decided not to go, and I don't have much interest in Pitt. I don't know if I'll be allowed to go to WVU, so PSU-Hazelton is pretty much the one I'd like to get advice on. Thanks for the help though.

As you probably know, Penn State uses as 2/3-1/3 formula. 2/3 of the admissions is based on GPA, 1/3 on standardized scores. Your scores are plenty good for most branches, including Hazelton. Erie, Harrisburg and Altoona are I believe the three hardest to get into outside of Main. The HS GPA is obviously the problem, but above 2 is better than below. Class rank supposedly doesn't matter. My D just got an email that PS-New Ken is offering free in person applications with an on the spot decision coming Oct 13 and Nov 11. You need HS transcripts and scores. Maybe see if other branches are offering this as well.

If you get into the PSU system and do well, transfer to State College will be easy. I would think that someone would take you within that system. Try looking at Penn State's CDSs for all campuses. They are online. There you can search scores and GPAs. Pick some targets and then talk to the local admissions people directly.

Additional note, a little less attitude is likely to go a long way on this board and in life. flaneur is right in mentioning the other schools, just trying to help. UPJ is one we just visited Friday. Nice campus, good facilities, not reall hard to get into, not really a branch campus feel since the vast majority of people go all four years there. Only one or two majors transfer to Oakland, unlike the smaller PSU campuses.

If the goal is to graduate from PSU Main, get into the PSU system now to have the best chance to transfer and know that all credits will be accepted.

I think the gpa average for branch campuses is around a 2.6 to a 2.7. The Penn State system is 2/3 gpa, so I do not see you getting accepted. You may want to look into Kutztown, Shippensburg, CC, etc.

OK, I'll stick to my opinion. It's my opinion you are wrong. As you pointed out, hours after I put up the same info, PSU uses a 2/3 - 1/3 formula. Yes 2/3 is based on GPA. The stats for Hazelton for 2007-2008 show that Hazelton accepted 90% of male applicants. It also shows that 2.3% of accepted students had a GPA of 1.00-1.99, and 16.61% had a 2.00-2.49. Let's not forget the other 1/3 is scores. It is highly unlikely that all of those students had an SAT equivalent to a 26 ACT, which would be somewhere in the upper 1100s, pushing 1200. That would probably put him in the top 10% of admited students. So I say OP is in, and it's my opinion. You think the average GPA at PSU is 2.6-2.7 (at branches I couldn't find any under 2.91, which was Hazelton's and DuBois') but it doesn't matter. The facts are that nearly 25% of Hazleton's kids were under a 2.5 and almost 1% were under 300, yes, that's right, 300, on their SAT CR and M. PSU Dubios stats are even a little easier, but I still say that 26 shows enough potential to get in Hazelton. Says HS slacker, but still worth PSU taking a chance and collecting the tuition for a semester.

OP stated the goal was the PSU degee. In the end, the easiest way to get to main campus is through a branch. I would suggest OP contact Hazleton's admissions office ASAP and get a visit in and just ask. Since he pulled out of BGSU, he's got some time on his hands. And unless he's not telling us something, like he's an ax murderer or something, I think he's in.
