Chances and 2 questions.

First and most importantly the questions:

Do you have to be a theater major/minor to work on plays? I am a techie and love working on plays (I will probably have about 300 tech hours when I graduate) but have no interest in going into a theater major.

Would it be ok to visit in the summer even though there’s not a lot going on? I coach in the fall as well as do theater work so it would be REALLY hard to visit there this fall, but I really want to see the campus. It’s only like a 2 and a half hour drive so it’s not too bad, just bad in the fall. lol

Secondly, and not as important: Chances

-Help found an all-girls basketball league in a poor Detroit neighborhood.
-Coached basketball for league above for 3 years.
-Coached softball and volleyball for 2.
-Help found an Animal Rights club at school. President Senior year.

-Have played Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, and Swimming for 13 years.

Thanks all =].

1) Absolutely not! It might be a bit harder to get involved with Theatre Department productions, but there's plenty of student theatre to work with that there's definitely no shortage of theatre tech (plus techies are in really high demand here).

2) Yes, it would be ok, but you won't really get to see a slice of life on campus. I think part of what makes Oberlin unique are the students, and there's not a lot of us here during the summer. But if your that close, I would definitely say its worth it.

Haha, thanks. The theater thing, well, Michigan requires you to be a theater major in order to do plays which is one of the reasons I stopped looking there. So now I'm being cautious.

No! No! As withinamile points out, the techies get love for all shows. It's open casting for all shows, and most classes. A friend of mine, who's a bio/religion major and the vp of the oberlin student theatre association (osta), took the Set Construction class. Do you like lights and sound, or construction?

Well, I'm in Oberlin right now, and it's pretty sleepy. If you tour, you see the facilities, but not the student body. If it would be impossible for you to come out during the school year, then come now. You can still interview and chat with the students around.

You're first generation? Cool! Oberlin has a few fly-in programs for first-gen students, you might want to call and ask.

Yes, yes and yes. Lol, I like everything. I'm better with construction and sound though. I would be more than willing to take a set construction class (that actually sounds really fun).

The fly-in programs. See the thing is, it's only a 2.5 hour drive. So it'd almost be easier just to drive, by the time I'd do the whole airport thing lol.

Yes! Techies are the best! I was doing a show this semester and the power blew repeatedly... one of our backup tech people was secretly an electrician - he saved the whole show. We love him. The set builder for the show referred to her piece as her "baby love" and insisted we were all gentle with it (it had 6 doors built in).

I know they do some special things for "fly-ins" (I think you can drive too), like panels and profs and such... It'd probably be best to call. Also, check when you're on break- chances are, our school schedules won't align, so you can visit when we're there.

I don't know when my breaks are, but I didn't think about that lol.

"Baby love" haha that's funny. I was so glad that I kind of got forced into theater. My school has double the amount of students Oberlin does so we have vast resources for the play (we are very lucky for that), and I'm glad that I have had my experience here. My first high school had adults doing must of everything, but my school is one of the few I've come across where it's almost exclusively student-run. I'll get my first taste of college theater this fall at MSU. Ahh!! I can't wait lmao.

I will look in to the fly-ins. Do you know who I would contact for that?

Woah. 6,000 kids go to your HS? That's crazy. Theater here is a mix, there are about 4 staff productions a year (the director is a prof) and a zillion student-run shows, from improv, to traditional plays, to circuses. There's a lot of leadership given to first-years who can take initiative, or have tech skills.

Hmm. I'd call the Admissions folks (800-622-6243) and ask.
