CHANCES? and Choosing a Business/Economics major at Bing?

First of all, congrats to all the recently admitted Binghamton students! You will soon find out why it is the BEST public school (in my opinion) in the nation.

Clearly, I am already a student at Binghamton, and I have come onto these forums hoping to get some advice from recent grads, current students, or well-informed parents who can help me out.

I must specify that while I love my school thus far, I am applying to transfer, but if I don't get into these places, I would like some advice on what major to choose at Bing.

I am a sophomore with a declared major in Management: Financial Engineering within SOM (School of Management). I chose this major, for the time being, since you are required to declare one in SOM.

I transferred into SOM just this year, after spending my freshman year in the Liberal Arts school.

I am applying as a transfer this year to a handful of schools with business-oriented majors (UPenn Wharton, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, etc.)

My GPA is a 3.73, I am very involved on campus, I have been on the Dean's list for 2 semesters, and I am quite confident in my chances of getting into Cornell, but not so much for the others.

I am hoping I can get chanced, but I would also like some advice as to whether or not to stay in SOM, or pursue my dream majors of Economics and Mathematics within Harpur (Liberal arts). Which career path is more lucrative?

This isn’t completely relevant, but how difficult was it to transfer within schools? From Liberal Arts into SOM?

I applied as transfer to Binghamton for the Fall 2011 and chose to be Undeclared, but I have strong interests around the business majors.

SOM makes it sound a lot more difficult than it really is. I applied as a freshman and with 1 excellent semester and one not-so-great one, I was accepted. I would recommend first getting into Binghamton, perhaps as a liberal arts major (economics, for example) and then seeing what you truly want to choose as a major.

I don’t think this is the proper forum to ask for chances to other schools. I would suggest posting a thread in those schools’ forums to see what student there think.

As far as transferring, why would you want to? You seem quite happy at Binghamton and being a transfer student can be very hard for some people, especially socially and academically (if you aren’t used to the workload, but for you I wouldn’t worry about that). SOM is one of the best business schools in the country and it compares competitively to schools such as Cornell and Columbia. Additionally, applying as a transfer, you do lose the opportunity to get better financial aid (many schools reserve the best aid for freshman) and Binghamton’s price is pretty darn good.

Also, just a word of caution for applying to Columbia as a transfer; you will need to catch up with their Core Curriculum which means additional classes and more time will need to be spent to catch up with that, as well as with any major requirements so be prepared to possibly spend an extra semester or year at Columbia should you get accepted.

Regarding switching schools again, what is your career goal? If your goal is somewhat academic or you know you want to attend graduate or law school, Harpur would have been fine to begin with. You had no reason to really switch. However, if you plan on working straight out of school, the connections SOM can give you in the business world are pretty amazing and worth staying for. But, at this point, you’ve already made the decision to switch schools so why would go through that again if you thought SOM was worth it over Econ/Math.

You can also try for the dual-degree program.

I’m facing a somewhat similar situation as you do. I am a freshman at Harpur right now, and i just submitted my IUT form to SOM. I’m wondering what courses did you take when you were a freshman. I noticed you have to complete certain courses in order to get into SOM. I had a 3.5 in my first semester due to Cal 2. I am confident to have 3.8 at least.I now have taken Stat 147, Cal 1 in high school, Cal 2here. I now taking CS105 and Macro for this semester; should i also make micro as well??

If I got rejected, i would transfer to other schools like those you mentioned above.
