Chances as International Student

I am an international Student from India.

My SAT 1 - 1910 (600 - CR, 720 - Maths, 590 - Writing)
SAT 2 - Math Level 2 - 720
Chemistry - 610
TOEFL iBt - 110/120

My GPA(on scale of 4) - 3.85

I am a first generation student.

EC -
National Level basketball
Captain of state team (u-19)
State level soccer
Dance competition winner (District)
Chemistry Olympiad - (23rd rank out of more then 5000 students)
Many other sports achievements.

Very strong recommendation letters.

Financially capable.

Note - I applied on Jan 10th but I called them up and they said they will consider my application.

Please chance.

Your SAT 1 is a little low (I do not know if they consider writing part, but if I do not mistake average reading+math=1400). I think it will make you harder, because you will be competing with a lot of students from India, and there are a lot of qualified ones.

Oh okay, but doesn't my TOEFL make up for it ? My GPA is quite high but my SAT is letting me down ..

Oh ok... thanks .. i thought the average score (Math + CR) was 1360 ...

I am afraid TOEFL is only a pass/fail :( As long as it is over 100, they do not care, mostly. I might be wrong about m+cr, but I think I saw the table, and remember Cornell having 1400. There might be a lot of people on these boards who got the accurate info. Can you retake the SAT in January?

no i cant ... i have my final school exam in march and plus my passport has expired and the date is over ... so .. not possible ... but is it something strict like they dont consider students below 1400 SAT score ?

on a scale of 100 ... wat are my chances ?

They do consider of course, but you face competitive pool from India itself... So chances are slim (stats based). But I did not see your essays, recs, etc., and that is exactly what admission office will see, and based on a general picture they will make a decision.

you were in the chem Olympiad and you got 610 in chem sat2?

O.O you were on the US Chemistry olympiad?

If yopu didnt apply for any financial aid you have a slim shot if you did well lets not go there.

^cornell is need blind for intl students, theres another thread about this called "chance an intl applicant with a low SAT I and high SAT IIs.

anyway, your chances are very very low (IE, it would be a miracle if you got in). The SAT I is overemphasized for intl applicants because it is the only method of standardizing a diverse pool. Even if you get in, would you be able to pay for it, Cornell offers no need based aid to intl students.

Agree. Cornell is not need-blind for international students. Daily Pennsylvanian is correct.

If anyone tries to make up some random stuff and say it's not need-blind, I'll just ignore that poster.

To the OP, I think your TOEFL scores will make up for your SAT Reasoning. I think you have an excellent shot, considering you're "national level basketball player." However, you're Chem Olympiad and only got a 610 on Chem SAT II?

^straight from the adcoms mouth, cornell is need blind for intl students, they just do not offer any need based aid to them.

For future clarification need blind means that the institution does not use need as a means of determining an admissions decision. Need blind has nothing to do with whether or not the institution actually meets that need.

Cornell WILL NOT meet that need. There are only about 15-20 hypercompetitive scholarships available for intl students, and it is merit based.

Also TOEFL is not an determining statistic in ones admission as far as you meet a benchmark score. If you do meet that score, the adcoms will place you in the pile of other intl applicants, if you do not pass that score, the adcoms will throw your app out. After that initial determination though, the TOEFL has no weight whatsoever.

I see how it is... Financial aid office makes up stuff about being need blind themselves... Hard times :(

Oh by the way, to the OP, which college are you applying for?

Since you're "financially capable", I am assuming you aren't applying for aid. It really depends on which college you're applying for. I mean... for engineering it is more self-selective. If you have the stats you're in. I actually think you have a great shot. Cornell does not look at your writing section (according to some senior members on this forum, to my surprise but nonetheless). This means that your overall SAT score is 1320. That is actually not bad. It is within Cornell's range.

In addition your TOEFL I think, is enough to override that Reasoning score. I would however, boost your SAT Chemistry score. It is too low. And it makes your International Chemistry Olympiad seems fluff and useless. It will come down, really, to your essays.

Your SAT II Math is not superb, but not bad. I have to know your prospective college before giving you a definitive answer though, and even my definitive answer is not definitive. XD

Oh I didn't see that you're from India. I think your Chemistry Olympiad is completely fluff. I do not believe that in a English-speaking country, a person ranked 23rd out of 5000 (I think there are more Chemistry Olympiad contenders in India than 5000 students) would get 610 on the SAT II Chemistry.

i dont no how i got so less in chemistry ... but even my grades in chemistry in high school are top notch ... i had a bad day i guess ... i even have a certificate given by the comitee man ... its a solid proof ..

Thats great....

A) what college are you applying too

B) There are so many people applying from india with perfect, or near perfect SAT scores, that I would say you are just not competitive for cornell. SATs are very very important for intl students.

Yeah but I bet you 99.9% of those students can pay a full ticket price (50k+) to travel half way around the world to cornell. Its all about the money.
