Chances at being accepted ... honest answer

Hey guys,

I am a junior in high school and I want to pursue a career as a civil engineer at an excellent engineering school such as Carnegie Mellon University.

I took the SAT for the first time on December 5th, and although I was slightly disappointed with my scores; I feel as if they were decent for having absolutely no preparation at all.

Here are my stats:

580 Critical Reading
530 Math
570 Writing

GPA - 3.98
Class rank - Top 25% (This is an estimate; I may be higher)

I am in the International Baccalaureate program at my school which is the equivalent of AP classes except for Pre Calc Honors and French 3 Honors. I hope to obtain an IB Diploma at the end of my senior year.

Extra Curricular - I play on the varsity soccer team and I am involved in a few clubs (Not an officer of any club due to soccer). Additionally, I am in the National Honor Society at my school.

I just wanted some honest outside input as to my chances of being admitted into the first year engineering program.

I am taking the ACT in February and plan to get a tutor to help me with the math. Also, I plan to take the SAT at least 2 more times.

Any advice given is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Is your 3.98 gpa weighed or unweighed?
If your gpa is unweighed, i think you’ll have a 50/50 chance if you get your SAT scores to about 2100+.
When I took the SAT first time in my junior year, I got a 1500… don’t be too disappointed because i’m sure it will go up! ( i raised a total of 610 points in one year)
However, your ECs look a bit bland. Try to obtain may be one or two leadership positions in your senior year.

Oh, and don’t forget to take SATII math IIC because it’s a requirement for CMU.

I think its unweighed although I may be wrong. Yeah im taking that subject test at the end of this year.

So based off of my GPA and SATs, I have no chance, unless I bring it up?

unless you’re planning to retake SAT, I honestly think it’ll be hard…

If that gpa is unweighted then
Retake the SAT
Sell yourself with great essays/rec letters
Interview (idk if CMU has interviews but if they do then get one)
Score high on the ACT

CMU does have interview but they are purely optional. They usually start up around October, and you have to call the admissions office to get one set up. I think you have a good chance if you boost those SAT scores.

hahaha nightvisitor, I know you are trying to be optimistic and all, but I really feel like my chance is a long shot unless this tutor I am going to get for the next time I take an SAT/ACT is going to help me increase my score significantly.

CMU seems to care a lot about interviews. That doesn’t mean you’ll get rejected if you don’t do one, but I think it shows that you are really interested in them, and they notice when you take the time to have one.
