Chances at CMU SCS? I'll chance back! :)

Hey guys!

So I know this is like my 500th chance thread, but after visiting schools and doing a lot of research, I really, really, really want to go to Carnegie Mellon! I'm a prospective computer science major, and just wanted to get some opinions. I know that SCS (School of Computer Science) has like a 6.8% acceptance rate (for RD), so many qualified people get rejected. But, do you think I'm a competitive applicant?

CTY (John's Hopkins Center for Talented Youth)
AP Scholar
Future Problem Solving (it is a club at many schools; I have a leadership position at my school - head mentor)
I have gone to the state championships 2 times and international championship once (at states I got fourth and then
first the following year. I got first at internationals)
Volunteering hours: ~250
I am also part of a Scoliosis support group (I had corrective Scoliosis surgery before my freshman year).
Tutoring: I tutor middle school students in math. These are students from underprivileged families.

Research:
I did an internship at IBM last summer and am doing one this summer.
I did a research project in computer science in 10th grade (what I worked on during my research class) and submitted it to a science fair (although I didn't win anything, that still got me exposed to the field I want to go into).
I did a research project in CS in junior year as well and won an ACM (a very prestigious organization in CS) award at the science fair).
I am currently working on a project with a mentor at IBM and am going to present my work at a pretty well known conference in October.

9th grade - JV Swimming
10th and 11th grade - Varsity Lacrosse (planning to play next year as well)

My research mentor said he'll write me a strong letter of rec so that's a plus :)
and my teacher recs will be good too I think

I also had an on campus interview with an admissions officer when I visited and he told me that I am the best student he has interviewed from my school (which is very well know at CMU - send 9-10 kids per year).

My why CMU essay also demonstrates a lot of interest since I'm very specific and tell them how certain classes will help me pursue my interests.

Sorry this is super long, but your advice would be greatly appreciated!

BTW - I'm a female (if that might be a hook) and I want to apply ED.

Thanks!

I'll chance you back if you want :)

bump

bump
I just got my ACT today and improved to a 34 so hopefully that will help (planning to retake 1 final time in October because I got a 34 on all sections and I know I have it in me to get a 36 on math which would boost me up to a 35C I maintain everything else).

Thanks in advance!!

I’d say high match only because the acceptance rate is low, but you’re overall application is great; I doubt you won’t make it.

thank you so much @HumNation‌

other schools on my list are: UIUC, UMich, Rice, Johns Hopkins, UCs, USC, UT Austin, Cornell, Northwestern, Georgia Tech

so if you don’t know much about cmu, then can you chance me for these?

UIUC, UMich, Georgia Tech- Match/safties
UCs, USC,- Match
UT Austin- Low reach
Rice, Johns Hopkins- reach
Northwestern, Cornell - high reach

I’m not too familiar with CMU but I think it’s going to be a reach/high reach.

Thanks  @gamink348‌

Most of these are matches to low reaches, and Cornell might be a high reach. I think you have a good chance with all of them! good luck

Thanks @koreanstudent‌

Like what korean student said, these schools are definitely within your grasp (match schools ) except for maybe cornell and Hopkins which are reach schools. Overall, your whole app seems strong, especially your ECs and test scores. You posted your grades on your classes, but what exactly is your W, UW, UC gpa(if you don’t mind me asking )? Also, how do you match up with your peers (class rank)?

UIUC, UMich, Georgia Tech- Safety
UC, USC,- Match
NorthwesternJohns Hopkins- reach
Cornell - high reach

Just due to the sheer statistics, not out of any fault of your own.

@TheCalculator‌ my UC UW GPA is a 3.92, UC W GPA is 4.6, school GPA (only weighted) is 4.15 (out of 4.5) - kind of on the lower end because of freshman year
My school doesn’t rank so I don’t know about that. Thanks for your help though

bump

You seem to have a solid profile. The IBM internship is impressive- make sure to highlight that on your application. Good luck on your October ACT!

I would say CMU is a low reach for CS, match for engineering.

CMU SCS: Reach/High Reach

@puzzled123‌ @hqureshi11‌ Thanks! :slight_smile:

If you live in Texas you are pretty much guaranteed UT Austin
I dont know much about CMU but you have a great overall application so I think you have a really good chance of gettting in

@darktoform31‌ Thanks! :slight_smile:

Wow your like a math genius!! Since you raised your ACT I believe you will get in, but that acceptance rate sucks :frowning: If you were applying to the regular college you would get in easily but CS is tough. Best of Luck!! :)
