Chances at CU-Boulder

Planning on applying to University of Colorado-Boulder and just wanted to see what kind of shot you all think I'd have.

OOS (Illinois)
GPA: 3.8/4.0 ... all honors classes
Rank: 92/520 (Top 20%)
ACT: 29
Extracurriculars: Varsity Volleyball (3 years...captain senior year), Kid's Volleyball Camp (grades 3-8), Varsity Basketball (freshman year), Volunteer at Therapeutic Riding Center, Peer Mediator, etc.

Good recommendations.

Chances?

you'll get in for sure

Consider it a safety. Do you have more selective colleges on your list as well?

Yep, I do.

I applied EA to UGA, but got deferred...so whether or not I apply RD there is still up in the air. It was definitely my reach...especially being an OOS. I also have applied to Miami University -- Ohio (my 'first-ish' choice) priority decision, and at this point am about 85% sure that I'm in. I've been accepted to Mizzou, but am not sure why I applied there in the first place...safety, I guess.

Anyway, I know it'd probably be better to send in the optional essay...but do you think it would really hurt me that badly if I didn't?

im from colorado. getting into cu boulder is really easy, and your scores are way higher than average. you dont even need to write the essays. your a shoe-in.

It couldn't hurt to include the essay. That way, you won't be second-guessing yourself. Have you visited Miami of Ohio yet? It's a very pretty campus, but located in a rural, farmland area. I only mention that since I noticed you're from Chicago.

Thanks for the reply SexyYetiBeast :)

GoBlueAlumMom:
My sister actually graduated from Miami, so I've been there numerous times. She loved it there, and I love the campus and people. I do worry a little about the small town 'nothingness' though.

I just wanted to make sure since kids coming from a large urban/suburban area can experience a bit of culture shock. Since you're very familiar with the school, it sounds like you'll be very happy there. Good luck!

I live in Cincinnati, and most kids make some trips down to Cincinnati each month. It's not that far at all. But the jump from Chicago to Cincinnati is still pretty big (a ton of people - 1.5 million)

I also applied to MU

your in at CU Boulder and should have a good shot at miami. I personally dont see what everyone likes about miami, but there are always a ton of kids at my school that go there (Im in pittsburgh). I like urban schools more though, which is why I chose NC State, and almost university of cincinnati (cinci's academics werent good enough). But in all honesty Miami is a great school, so if you end up there, nice work.

do you realize boulder's acceptance rate is 85%? You should really apply to harder schools with your GPA rank and EC's.

Thanks for the replies all. :)

Jethro:
I think Miami is the type of school you either LOVE or HATE...there's really no in between. You either like those 'kinds' of people, or you hate them.

l4ur3nz0:
I realize there are other schools I should be applying to, which is why Miami and UGA were my top two. I consider UGA my reach, Miami my match, and CU-Boulder and Mizzou my safeties.

I'm trying to figure out more matches...but at this point, I think I'm being too picky.

I'm also thinking of applying to UW-Madison as a reach.

Wisconsin is not a reach for you; although, the longer you wait, the worse your chances. How about the Univ of Washington, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana? Then again, maybe Colorado is also fine. Boulder is supposed to be a great place to go to school.

my ex girlfriend goes there and loves it... big party school too

dstark:
Oh, I know...believe me, I normally wouldn't wait this long. I've been obsessing over going to college since sophomore year. However, all my focus since August has pretty much gone to UGA. After getting deferred though, I've kind of starting thinking about where I honestly want to go. So now I'm scrambling trying to get other applications sent out.

I'm planning on getting my UW-Madison application sent out by this Friday.

My parents have tried talking me into applying to U of I, but I really just don't have much of a desire to go there. Not quite sure why....

Considered IU as a safety quite awhile back, but I kind of let that one fizzle out.

apply to michigan. you have a decent chance

I dont know... U of M will be a reach too if UGA deferred.

I really have no desire to go to Michigan. Great school...but just not interested.

And I think my deferral at UGA really doesn't determine much for other schools...since my stats were the same (if not better) than some of the stats of accepted applicants I have seen posted on the UGA forum. I'm not knocking UGA by any means, but I just don't think it's a fair indicator or where I could get accepted. :)

BTW ryan, congrats on your acceptance to UGA! ;)

you'll definitely make it in. Don't even count on getting rejected unless you cheated or having something worse.

one thing you might want to keep in mind is the OOS tuition at CU which is very expensive, and then weigh that against the tuition of other, perhaps stronger, schools that you are quaified for
