I just finished a semester at American University's School of International Service. I am not happy here, but love Washington DC. I also would like a school that has more focus on Security Issues, and is more rigorous. So, I was hoping I could transfer to SFS.

HS Stats:
GPA: 3.5 unweighted
SAT: 1310 (out of 1600, forget the writing portion)

College Stats
GPA: 4.0 (includes 300-level course)
-My paper was chosen for presentation at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research, could be published
EC's: VP of Student Alumni Assocation, VP of Arabic Club, College Democrats, AU Foreign Policy Assocation, Intramural Sports, Finance Club
Work: Intramural Basketball Referee

-Recommendation from one of the best professors at American University, who is an alumn from Georgetown University.

Do you all think I have a chance of transfering? Any response is welcome.

I do think you'll have a shot, but not this early in the game. You'll probably need another semester or two of great grades from American to cover up for your high school record. It is worth a shot, but SFS is very selective and they will weigh your HS stats pretty heavily as of now.

I think high school grades are still very important if you're applying for sophomore standing. And I just find it hard to believe that you'd describe somebody as the "best professor at American University" which is a fairly large and complex academic institution. Generally, professors aren't ranked like that, especially considering there are dozens of different academic areas and the professors can't be considered this way.

I'm sorry for my wording for the professor's recommendation. What I meant was he has taught at American for years and is highly esteemed, I do not know enough to be more specific.

It seems from the replies that I do not really have any chance of getting in for Fall 2007. Can anyone give a percen chance that I could be accepted? Just so I know where I stand.

We can't give you a percentage, but your HS record is a B+ which isnt shabby, and your college performance is impressive. With great essays/recs, you have a pretty good shot, since G'town is pretty heavy on the transfers (for that level of school that is). Good Luck!

Forget the writing score. IMO the writing section should not be graded, but should be sent as a valid, unedited writing sample. You look great re:transfer, however Georgetown may have very few,if any, spots available due to high yield and high student satisfaction.

It may help if you applied to GT last year and were rejected. Shows interest and determination. If you applied and turned down GT,I think your chances would be slim.

Your post is interesting. I have been hearing positive comments regarding the quality of instruction at American. Of course, Georgetown has it all in the eyes of many.

American is a very good school. I do not mean to say otherwise. Alot of good kids here too. I just underachieved in high school, and drank too much. Once I got my 'act' together I realized that I needed to go somewhere more rigorous than American.

Is there anything I can do at this point to put me over the edge in my chances to Georgetown? More EC's? 2 professor recommendations?

I am not qualified to properly answer your questions. Georgetown"s applications are up by at least 8% this year, so the main obstacle will be finding an available space. IMO the bast you can do is to gat your paper published and pursue your studies with enthusiasm. A degree from American is and should be well respected.

If you are thinking about graduate school, it may be to your advantage to graduate at American with honors, high class rank, close association with professors and significant EC"s,rather than to finish in the middle of the pack at GT.

I am not trying to transfer because I do not like American. I do pursue my interests with enthusiasm and would be proud of an American degree. Like I said earlier, however, if I stay and graduate from American I would not learn as much as I would like, and my four years here would be a cakewalk. I want, no, NEED to go somewhere more rigorous, otherwise I will bore myself at American. While it is a good school, I feel that I need to go some place harder. That is why I am applying to Georgetown.

I also want to pursue a concentration in Security Issues, which the American faculty do not have a great deal of expertise in. Georgetown has plenty.

I hope to have a good chance at Georgetown, but staying at American would not be awful. It still is a good school. Graduate school is not my priority right now.

you are placing too much emphasis on Ec's. Yes, they are important, but having your paper chosen for a journal will not make or break your application. And if more EC's would in fact help out your app, you still should wait a year to become more involved, unless you plan on making them up which would not be a smart idea.

Will it make a difference that my 3.5 in high school included almost all honors and 7 AP classes? My only SAT II was US History, where I got a 760?

I applied out of high school with a 3.7 gpa, all honors and ap's ,and 3 sat II's above 700 and was not admitted. It all really depends. Lots of students have these qualifications and you do have a shot with grades like that, but there are no guarantees or anything of the sort. For transfer, it's really important what you're college gpa is since this is a new piece of information that high school applicants are not able to submit.

What classes did you take at AU? If you took a foreign language that 4.0 would be much more impressive. I don't like your chances this semester because I know another kid from AU thats applying to Georgetown with a 4.0 first semester(2 honors classes, Japanese, and Econ) plus a 2240 SAT score and a 3.8-3.9 in high school with 11 AP's. Good Luck.
