Chances at getting into UCI

Hey guys! I’m kind of worried at being rejected to all of the UC’S that I applied to :frowning: and wanted someones opinion anyways, i applied to UCI, UCD, UCSD, UCSB. I’m a senior and applied as a civil engineer major(wanted to change it to pharmacist bc its less impacted) and here are my stats. Also, my school is ranked #325 in california ranking. Im hispanic and come from a poor low income family.

UC GPA: 4.10
SAT: 1230
USH SAT sub test: 680, SPAN sat sub test:670
APUSH: 3, APSPAN: 4, APLANG: 2
EC: Communicater advisor for 2 clubs And also joined like 2 other clubs.
CS: over 120 hours at local church for 2 years, math tutor at my school for 2 years
I also had a job to help my family out
Forgot to say im currently taking 3 ap’s my senior year and got a 4.5 first semester.
My dream school is UCI. Thanks for those that reply !

Hi, did you apply for financial aid? II’m curious if two applicants with similar background, will UCs (Actually in particular UCI), prefer the one who could pay full tuition and doesn’t need any financial aid over the other one who is in need of financial aid? My point is they want to make money and be profitable.

UC’s are need blind meaning your ability to pay is not factored into their decision however, if you are an out of state or International applicant they are aware you would be full pay. You cannot change majors at UCI until you have enrolled and complete the course requirements needed for the major change.

@tryhard89: Race/Ethnicity not considered in UC admission decisions. UC’s give generous FA for low income students but you are still expected to contribute some amount towards your education. Run the Net Price calculator to see your estimate.

Your UC GPA and SAT scores are within range for UCI. SAT scores however are below the average for admitted Civil Engineering students (1307 for last year’s Freshman). http://www.oir.uci.edu/files/adm/IA26-fall-fr-mean-sat-by-major.pdf?R=305939

UCI is High Match school for you.

@ocuxdesign yes i did apply for financial aid

@Gumbymom hello and thanks for your response. I actually managed to change my major to pharmaceutical science ( i actually want to major in this didn’t do it just to get accepted ) . Do you think i have a better chance at being accepted?

The acceptance rate of 43%, average SAT of 1239 and average UC GPA of 3.98 puts in you a better position for Pharmaceutical Sciences than Engineering. I would say UCI is a Match school. UCSB/UCD probably High Match and UCSD a Low Reach. Hopefully you have some safety schools on your list and best of luck. UC’s can be unpredictable but your stats on target.

@Gumbymom Are these stats for acceptance rate based on major or college. either way, can u link me the stats?

The rates posted are by major @ironweasal

@Gumbymom Thank you. Are they available for the other UC schools as well?

@iornweasal: UCI is the only school that I have found which posts this information. I still continue to check the UC websites to see if I am able to find similar data, but nothing so far.

@Gumbymom can you chance me for Pepperdine? Applied as a math major. Sorry for the bother

Wow! In my opinion I don’t see what else the admissions office at UCI could be looking for!! Like some said above, you could try to possibly bump up your SAT score by retaking one, or even trying the ACT, but I truly don’t think your current score is one that would cause the admissions to reject you. As for Pepperdine, I’d say that you have a very likely shot of getting admitted - problem is is that their big academic merit scholarships go to students with crazy high SAT Scores (although your GPA is perfect), so even though you’d most likely get admitted, paying for it could be a future issue. But your stats are very impressive, and I’d be shocked if you didn’t get into UCI. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!!

I know it keeps being mentioned that race is not a factor in admissions, but UCI and UCSB have been given awards for being Hispanic serving institutions. These schools are doing more to help underserved minorities gain admission. Your family background makes you a unique applicant. Pepperdine is a great school. They have excellent prehealth advisors. They paid my entire tuition when I was an there because I had good stats and came from a poor family/1st gen college student, even though I was not a URM. The campus is very isolated much like ucsc, so that can be a bummer.

Pepperdine also considers 9-11 grades and looks at unweighted gpa as well.
