Chances at JMU

I just wanted to know my chances at James Madison University.

My GPA is a lousy 2.9, but my SAT score is 1180, which is in the mid-range for James Madison University. I have over 150 hours of community service, as well as a lot of extracurriculars including eight years of ballet, French Club, Multi-Cultural Club, Virginia Math League, Student Ambassador, etc.

I have always taken advanced classes and started Algebra in seventh grade. I was in the top twenty at my old school, but at my new school, which I have been attending since tenth grade, has a lot of very competitive students which brought my class rank down to 95/250.

My current advanced courses are DE English, AP Biology, and AP Calculus. I took AP Psychology last year. I am also in my fourth year of a foreign language and even participated in a student exchange program over the summer.

I am planning on majoring in International Affairs with a double major in French. I talked with my admission's counselor at JMU (before applying) about my situation, and she told me to drop her an e-mail. I did send her a message explaining why I wanted to go to JMU while also sending a resume with my application. I applied early decision. Do you think I have any chance whatsoever?

Thanks.

I predict a waitlisted status. You don't say if you are in state or not. Out of state, would be no. You did the right thing by contacting your area rep. at JMU. He/She would be the one to go to bat for you. Continue to do this. It may help you gain admission. Keep your mid-year grades UP as high as you can. Your sat scores don't matter as much to JMU, they are notoriously GPA driven. With that in mind, your chances are slim. Good Luck!

How are you top 40% at your school with a 2.9? Maybe our grades are inflated but that is not a very high GPA (as you know).

I am in-state.

that GPA is gonna hurt you
