Hi I am an incoming senior at nyc queens. What are my chances at nyu with 1690 sat and 94.5 gpa. I am first gen college student with less than 15000 income for family of 6. I did like 2 internship and vice pres of shs and other ec. It would be very helpful if anyone tells me what are my chances.I'm planning to take act in sept when I practixe its around 24.

NYU is not known for good aid. A 24 on the ACT would not get it done. Need 30+

take this over to the chance thread, OP.

NYU is a reach for you. You need at least a 28 ACT or at least 1900 on the SAT to be competitive (those are the bottom 25th percentiles). Even if you were to get in, you would probably get very little financial aid. Although your ECs and GPA slightly make up for your SAT score, keep in mind that it is a need-aware school so the fact that you require so much aid will make NYU very difficult for you to get into. There are thousands of full pay applicants with similar to better stats than you who are vying for the same spot. I don’t mean to be harsh but this is the reality. That doesn’t mean you’re an automatic rejection, but I would advise on looking for other, more feasible schools. Look at Manhattan College for a school that you would probably be able to get into.

Thank you I just joined Collegeconfidential so I dont really know how to use it. Where is the chance thread.

wayneandgarth Do you think I would qualify for HEOP

sumobats, thank you for the responsse. Also I just started practicing for the ACT. I think I can improve by fall 2014. Do you suggest any ACT course. I think I can reach a 28 with a little bit more prep, but I don’t know any good prep class for ACT.

Also I took 3 APS 5 on AP calc AB, 3 on APUSH. Did really horrible in AP comp. a 1.

@fahi21 I messed up on something I said earlier. Apparently NYU is need-blind, not need-aware, so I think you stand a better chance than I thought earlier. I haven’t taken the ACT yet though. I’m on the same boat as you and taking it in the fall, but I am studying only through the official ACT book. My counselor also has around 5 different practice tests in his office so I am taking advantage of that as well. Since prep classes can be expensive, I think using resources from your counselor and at the library may be your best bet. Take practice tests, review EVERY SINGLE ANSWER, not just answers you got wrong, and correct yourself. Try your best to identify your weaknesses and improving them won’t be as hard as you think. There’s a whole ACT subforum that you can look through.

Meant to type @fahi12, not 21.

its alright. sumobats if you dont mind can i aask you to tell me some of your grades and ec’s and anything else, since you say ur in the same boat as me.

sumobats also what h.s. are you in. Are you NYC res.

@fahi12 I meant that I am in the same boat as you as in I am taking my ACT for the first time in the fall as well. I used to be interested in NYU though but realized that it wouldn’t work out for me financially. I’m not an NYC resident.

Please apply for QuestBridge. You could get into a very good school for free
