Chances at NYU.

Alright, so I'm relatively new at this site so I've got a couple questions. Also, I apologize in advance if I'm going about this incorrectly.

So I'm looking at NYU but I'm not really sure if my scores are good enough for admissions.

I've got a 3.6 Unweighted, and a 3.8 weighted GPA.
My ACT was a 31.
I haven't taken the SAT or any SAT subject tests.
I've taken a bunch of AP classes and tests.
The thing is though, I had a really weak freshman year due to health problems with my brother (it looked like he was going to die) and my father deploying to Iraq. Do you think a really good essay will fix that though?
Also, I've got a bunch of good Extracurricular activities that I'm really good at or high up in the chain of command at.
My parents make (together) about 140k a year.

So my questions are,

1) Do I have a chance?
2) If not, what can I do to increase that change?
3) If I can get in, what are my chances for financial aid?

thanks so much for your help!

I’d say you’re a match – you’re qualified, but it could go either way.

ACT score is solid but NYU might want to see SAT I/SAT II scores. Getting your GPA up to 3.75+ will give you a much better chance. You have any ECs? You probably wouldn’t get good financial aid given your parents’ income. No one at NYU gets good FA anyways though…

i’d say your stats are a match, average gpa high school for nyu is w:4.0 unw:3.6, but the rest of your stats are good, just get good sat’s and write a stellar essay. Its hard to judge if you will get in based on only gpa and act, so keep working hard!

Seems to be a match to high match. Get good recs, get a good interview, and write some good essays! =]

…NYU sucks at Financial Aid from what I hear, though. Good luck =]
