Chances at Top Schools

Hi again! I said I was going to do this (post my chances for my full list of schools) and so here I am. My dream school is Washington University in St. Louis, but I am also applying to my state schools - UC Berkeley, UCLosAngeles, UCSanDiego, UCDavis. By the way, California schools are getting more and more competitive to get into each year, so I am worried about my chances at the UCs as well. Also, I may apply to biochemistry, biology, or chemistry as fields of study. The full list of schools I am applying to:

Washington University in St. Louis
Cornell
Brown
Dartmouth
Stanford
UC Berkeley
UC Los Angeles (UCLA)
UC San Diego (UCSD)
UC Davis

My high school experience so far:
HS: large public school in CA/ so far ranked 1 out of class of about 500.
GPA: 4.0/4.0; 4.3 weighted
SATI: 780 M/ 800 V/ 740 W- 2320 total
SATIIs: Chemistry- 790; Math II- 800

Currently a junior, set to apply to my dream school since freshman year!

Some of my ECs (excluded a few items and my awards for anonymity):
- Class Vice-Prez sophomore year
- City youth orchestra concertmaster
- President of school's volunteer club...more than 300 hours of volunteer service around the community
- Summer research program- selected as one of 20 out of 200 applicants...Siemens Westinghouse semifinalist

- Amateur writer - published in online and printed poetry and fiction magazines (not anything big name but it's an accomplishment for me)

Please give me your view of my chances! Thanks!

If not you…then who?

WashU is by no means out of the question. Get some stronger ECs for sure, though, if you really want to set yourself apart. Same with Brown and Dartmouth. Cornell might be a bit of a reach and Stanford might be difficult solely because you’re from CA and they’re going to work to bring in a lot of out of state kids.

Thank you!
Bring up my post.

I can’t imagine you getting rejected from WashU with those credentials, I don’t know what agc’s talking about. I think you’ll also have a really good shot at Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, and Stanford, and I’d be surprised if you didn’t get into at least one.

WashU-In (As long as you keep up the work and improve)
Cornell-Mid to Low reach
Brown-Mid-High reach
Dartmouth-Mid-High reach
Stanford-High reach(same for everyone)
UC Berkeley-Low Reach
UCLA-In
UCSD-In
UCD-In

First off, I agree with the above poster that WashU is by no means a guaranteed admission. But you probably know that. Second, I think you do have a very good chance, and should definitely apply. If you apply, try applying Early Decision since you love the school. I hope you visit the campus too. It is as beautiful as any college campus can get. If money weren’t an issue for me years back, I’d probably have gone to WashU (currently at UCLA)

So here are my thoughts on your chances:

Washington University in St. Louis: Unpredictable, but good chance. Apply Early if possible.
Cornell: Seems to be on par with WUSTL. Good chance.
Brown: Good chance.
Dartmouth: Probably need a little luck along with your credentials
Stanford: Need your credentials and some luck
UC Berkeley: Keep up your grades and you’re in
UC Los Angeles (UCLA): Same verdict as with Berkeley
UC San Diego (UCSD): In
UC Davis: In

Thanks to all.
Anyone else?

I know people say I have great test scores, and quantitatively I can’t see how they are wrong (I’m not bragging, but test scores are quantifiable)
The thing I’m worried most about are my extracurriculars. For example, how can I convey how much music has meant to me without sounding cliche? I know my list of activities may not seem “BOOM WOW” to some people, but I am really committed and love what I do.

Hi WeiWang9,

I got scared because the way the letters in your post showed up as a massive block on my computer screen made me think a virus had attacked, or that some errant program were running. Then I realized it what it said. You do mean ‘Princeton’ right? Thank you for your kind assessment! However, I probably will not apply to Princeton, and most of all I want to know whether my activities are okay…

Thanks for the heartstopping message nevertheless.

Washington University in St. Louis - Match/ low Reach
Cornell - Match / low Reach
Brown - Match / low Reach
Dartmouth - Match / low Reach
Stanford - Reach
UC Berkeley - In
UC Los Angeles (UCLA) - In
UC San Diego (UCSD) - In
UC Davis - In

Hmmm im not sure if those ECs match up to your grades/scores.
buff up on those ECs, and you should be in or at least high match for everything except standford.

Thank you shph119!

bump

i would say you have a low-mid reach chance with those ivies
because of those excellent sat scores but that lower end weighted gpa might hold you back a little.
for the UCs - easy in
