Chances at UC's

Hello; I'm a first time user that just finished up my UC application. I'm a white male (Jewish…if that's worth anything...) and a CA resident. Thanks!

GPA:
4.17 weighted
3.82 un-weighted
4.00 UC
Class Rank: 24/422 (5.7%)

Awards/Honors:

National Young Leaders Conference
American Legion Boys State (1 of 6)
Pride Award (Given to students at my high school that best display care for the student environment and show a commitment to making the school a better place.)
School Board Student of the Month

Extracurriculars:
Baseball (4yrs; team captain)
Flag Football (2yrs; co-captain)
Barbershop Quartet (3yrs; student director and lead singer)

Community Service:
ESL Tutor (40hrs)
Vocal Shows (80hrs; I sing with a small group that visits elementary schools in the area. We spend time working with the students and end our stay with a performance.)
D.A.R.E. Role Model (20hrs)
Napa Music Clinics (120hrs; I work as an instructor for all types of new musicians multiple times a year. I get them started, then teach new ideas as they progress.)
TOTAL: 260hrs

Work Experience:
Front Desk Manager: 3yrs (year-round); 8hrs/week

SAT: (I CAN’T take standardized test well…)
SAT I: 560CR 600M 580W = 1740
SAT II: 590BIO 590MATHII

Other:
I love music! I’m over involved with my high school choir program: Section Leader since freshman year; 3yrs concert choir; 3yrs chamber choir; 2yrs vocal wkshp; 2yrs barbershop; student director of beginning men’s choir this year.

Career Outlook:
Undecided between 2 fields. If I chose to be a choir director, I’m going to San Francisco State (music scholarship), but I’d love a career with writing (journalist, creative writer, university professor, etc.) Are my chances at the UC’s better if I apply undeclared or as an English major?

My goal going into the application process was to not have a no. 1 choice; I’d by happy at all of these schools, I just want to know!!! What are my chances at?:

UCB
UCD
UCSD
UCLA
UCSB
USC? (Should I apply???)

Thank you so much for your time and thoughts. Happy Thanksgiving!

If you're willing to shell out the money, then apply everywhere in your list. I would say that since you do have a high GPA and class ranking, but low SAT's, your prospects are as follows.

UCB, UCLA: pretty big Reach (You really need to get 2000 and SAT II's up to 650)
UCSD: slight Reach (UCSD uses the dreaded formula, so you probably won't hit the 7500 pt mark academically)
UCSB, UCD: Match
USC: Same category as UCB

Right now you're 400 points below the average for SATs. 200 pts missing in SAT I's and 50 pts missin in both SAT II's.

How do they calculate your pts for the "Dreaded Formula"? What if you are close to 7500pts?

I don't know the entire formula, but the majority of it goes toward your GPA and SAT scores.

1000(UC weighted GPA) + .8(SAT I + 2 SAT II's)

You get some smaller points along the way for EC's/awards, if you are ELC, first generation, if you've taken a lot of a-g classes, etc. I'd say you have a pretty decent shot of getting 7500 points on their system, but you'd probably really want more like high 7000's to around 8000 to call it a sure match.

Thanks vupreuss06. I wasn't planning on applying USC; just curious. I also like UCB and UCD more than UCLA, so I'll probably switch UCLA out with UCI because its more of a match. Mercinator - I went and looked at the UCSD Comp Form and I'd be somewhere between 7350 and 7750, depending on how they value my info, which I guess isn't bad. Anyone else feel like evaluating my chances? Thanks.

batman32c:

UCB/UCLA: Reach (SATs)
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCSB/UCD: Match

batman32c:

UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCSB/UCD: Match

UCB? really low
UCD? high
UCSD? ...mehhh not-so high, but not low either
UCLA? low
UCSB? high
USC? low

mainly because of ur low sat scores

Thanks for the time everyone. I felt like a knew what you would say (UCB/UCLA: Reach, UCSD: Slight Reach, UCD/UCSB: Match), I just wanted to see for sure. If I had to pick, my 2 favorites right now are UCD and UCSD, and I like the feedback I got (UCSD Comp Form made me feel a little better.) Since UCB and UCLA are both reaches, I'm going to replace one of them, probably UCLA, and was wondering what my chances are for the University of Washington (Seattle.) Thanks!

I would stay with the UC and not bother to apply out of state. Why bother paying out 160k when you can get the same quality of education at your backyard?

It doesn't cost 160k to go OOS to University of Washington. UW tuition + room and board OOS: $25500 - w/ an average financial aid package of $9000. I'm considering applying because it's a highly ranked public school and I really like Seattle. I think I have a good chance; what do you guys think?

I didn't check the price tag but 20k is still double what a UC costs if I remember correctly. OOS applying to a high ranked public school for financial aid is TOUGH. I would say you have a better shot instate but if you really love the place, you can give it a shot.
