Chances at UMich, Georgetown, BC, Northeastern, BU (Very Lengthy/Deliberate)

Hey everyone,

In addition to the schools in the thread title, I'm also applying to Cornell and Dartmouth. However, I know how random those admissions are so input on those is optional.. UMich and Northeastern were EA, everything else RD.

Scores and Stats
- GPA (U): 3.78
- GPA (W): My high school doesn't weigh grades, can anyone point me to a good site to figure this out?
- Class Rank: Unreported, most likely top 10%
- SAT: 1560/2300 (CR 760, M 800, W 740)
- ACT: 35
- SAT 2: Lit. 720, Math 2 800, US Hist. 740
- AP: Lang. 5, US Hist. 4

My senior year schedule is composed of 4 APs and a few college classes:
- AP Physics C
- BC Calc
- AP Macro
- AP Com. Sci.
- English through Syracuse Project Advance (I intend to take the AP Lit. exam although this class does not prep me specifically for it)
- A political science introductory class and Latin class through my local SUNY school

ECs
- Running(!): I've done XC for 3 years, indoor and outdoor track for four. I made the varsity squad during outdoor my sophomore year and have been a fixture since. This is my main focus
- Outing Club: Go on hiking, canoeing, and ski trips, orienteering, ultimate frisbee, and other outdoor activities
- Environmental Science Team: Basically an environmental advocacy club. We've done fundraisers for local environmental organizations and run a school composting program for the school garden
- Chess Club: This one seems pretty self-explanatory. We play chess and go to tournaments to get pounded by home-schooled chess whizzes

Honors/Awards
- Team Captain: Got this title at the start of this XC season
- Coaches' Award: Awarded by my coach for leadership and sportsmanship
- National Latin Exam Gold Summa cum Laude: Highest level on the exam, got this in 10th and 11th grade
- Foreign Language Department Certificate of Merit: I'm pretty sure this was awarded to half my class, but I was happy to get it nonetheless
- National Honor Society
- National Merit Commended Scholar
- Around 100 hours of community service through my parish
- Tutored younger students in Global and US History in 11th and 12th grade

Essays/Recs
- My common app essay is about how ultimate frisbee has shaped me; I thought it was solid, but who knows

My recommendations are coming from:
- Latin Teacher: have had him 3 years, I anticipate a good rec
- English Teacher: had her in 9th and 11th grade, she told me she wrote about my growth as a person and writer over that time period
- Additional rec from my coach: Seems to like me, but you can never tell with coaches
- Counselor: Should be excellent, I've had a great relationship with her

Additional
I moved from an inner city school district to a rich suburban school district prior to my freshman year. The former was ranked worst district in the area, and the latter consistently topped these rankings. Change was interesting and my grades suffered a bit, and the school is very competitive, but I feel like I've adjusted pretty well.

That's about it. I bet it was hell to read, but if you suffered through it and left your thoughts, I'd really appreciate it. I wrote this looking for more input than my counselor and my parents, since it's nice to hear negative input every once in a while. Also, if you would like me to chance back, just link to your thread and I'd be happy to return the favor.

U of M - You might get deferred, but either way you will get in when they look at the rest of your application. Your GPA is average for the school and your rigor is a little above average.
Northeastern - You’ll get in EA. Recs are a big part and according to you they’re fantastic.
Georgetown- You’re in.
BC - You’re in.
BU- You’re in.
Dartmouth- You’re above average, I’d give you an 80-20
Cornell - Same as above

Do mine please!

I am not really sure, but you SAT score is pretty good, but you seem to come from a pretty privileged background. Make sure that you don’t seem snobby when you write your essays. Just make sure that you write a good essay.

@jojo
I’m decidedly middle class, and I was in an inner city district for most of my schooling. Hopefully I don’t come off as snobby at all, I’m almost the opposite in fact. I don’t think I sound snobby or anything in my essays. Thanks for the input, if you want me to chance I’d be happy to!

Bump, will chance back if that makes a chance more likely

Adding Rochester to my list. Interviewed there today, went pretty well, only hesitated on one question. Thought it was good for my first interview.

yeah, it’s just that outing club kind of comes across as it. None of the schools around me have one, and it would most likely cost a substantial amount to create one; I am middle class as well. Oh, and Latin seems preppy but cool. I am applying to Georgetown too, but I am still worried. I got a 2240 and have a pretty good background, but you never know. Good Luck! Chance me please.

I am actually at Georgetown right now! It is amazing, and I am sure that you would love it if you got in. Are you applying for the Walsh school of foreign services?

Hi. Thanks for chancing me!

UMich (EA)- match/high match
Northeastern (EA)- low match
Cornell- high match/low reach
Dartmouth- low reach
Georgetown- high match/low reach
BC- low match/ match
BU- low match

You have a solid app and your testing is most likely in the 75th percentile at least for most (if not all) of your schools. Your GPA is only a slight concern but it’s not even that bad and shouldn’t hold you back majorly. I would not be surprised if you were to come out of decision season incredibly satisfied. However, that’s just my opinion. Among your hardest three to get in (Georgetown, Cornell, and Dartmouth), I would assume that you’d get into at least one or two.

Good luck and thanks again for chancing me!

How many APs does your school offer and how many have you taken? Rigor is very important, especially because your GPA isn’t that great for the top schools on your list.

@jojo
Ahhh, okay, that explains a lot. We don’t go on ski trips, I’m not sure what caused me to write that. A lot of the stuff we do is out of our own pockets, or the club advisor (who is also my Latin teacher) foots the bill. The district is certainly preppy and privileged, but personally I am not. As for Georgetown, I’ve heard it has an awesome campus from my friend’s brother, but I only plan on going down there if I get in. I applied to Georgetown College, going in undeclared, but who knows. Good luck!

@app
My GPA kills me! I wish I knew how much I would regret being lazy in my freshman and sophomore years… I didn’t think it mattered so much. Your judgements are in line with my own, except for the three you mentioned; I think I’m more in the reach for each, but that’s probably from reading about too many insane applicants on CC. Oh well. Good luck!

@bigwords
I’ve taken a majority of the APs offered. Sophomore year we are only offered AP World, and there were too many kids and only one section, and I ended up being unlucky and could not take the class. The only other APs I didn’t take were Bio and Chem, but generally those are senior courses and I’m doing AP Physics. We have to take the regular/honors science classes because of the Regents in NY, so there’s only so much room in our schedules. I’d say I have one of the toughest schedules because I’m taking APs in each core subject (whereas a lot in my school are focusing on math/science only).

Edit: Forgot to mention I’ve taken exclusively honors classes in the core subjects where no corresponding APs were offered. If we weighed grades my GPA would be higher relative to my classmates, but that’s not the case (and it’s also not who I’m competing against in admissions).

Well that’s good. I would say Georgetown, Cornell and Dartmouth are low reaches. You should get into at least one, I would think.

Can you make sure it’s Dartmouth? Haha…

Ya, the campus was amazing. The majority of the women were beautiful, and the architecture was so cool. The city around georgetown is so cool, and there are really good cupcakes here too.

U of M- match/ high match
G’Town- low reach
Northeastern- match
BC- match/ high match
BU- match
Dartmouth- low reach/reach
Cornell- low reach

Personally I think you have a better shot of getting into Cornell than Darthmouth, but if you can compete on Darthmouth’s XC team, then I would say your chances exponentially increase. Good luck! Chance back please! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1577460-chance-blue-devil-duke-ed-hopeful-receive-chance-return.html

^I agree one hundred percent with the poster above.

Good luck! :slight_smile:
(And PS… You don’t sound snobby by any means, don’t worry!)

@Yeah
There’s absolutely no way I can run at Dartmouth, the team is filthy. I’d play ultimate if I got in (and I have been in contact with the ultimate team, but that doesn’t affect admission, unfortunately). I’ll get right on your chancing.

@beatles
Thanks for chancing me and for the luck, hopefully it pays off

Good luck! Please get me back too.

UMich (EA)- match
Northeastern (EA)- low match
Cornell- low reach
Dartmouth- reach
Georgetown- low reach
BC- low match
BU- safety/low match

UPDATE:
Got accepted EA at both Northeastern and UMich…
Northeastern Honors Program and 22k merit aid, no financial aid released by UMich as of 12/24…

Good luck all, will keep updating!
