Hello,
I am a Jordanian rising senior living in the Middle East and very soon i will be applying to University of Michigan to study industrial engineering. Not sure yet whether i should apply early non-binding action or regular . If i apply regular i will probably have a higher SAT score as i am taking it again, and will have three Sat subject tests. Also, do you think i have a good shot at getting in? My stats are the following:
Unweighted GPA: 3.85
Sat score: 1820 (will be retaken)
APs:
-World History: 5
-Psychology: 5
-Macroeconomics: 5
-Microeconomics: 5
-Physics 1: 2 (probably will not report)
-Seminar: 3
Ap calculus, Spanish, us government, and research: will be taken in my senior year
-I will take three Sat subject tests in November (Physics, MAth 2, and Spanish)
Extracurriculars:
-3 years Varsity soccer (captain for one year) (1 years JV)
-2 years Varsity volleyball (2 years JV)
-Student government: Vice President 11th grade, Perhaps President next year
-Cofounder of a very creative community service project
-Cofounder of school website
-Mun (2 years)
- Dele Spanish certificate
- Honors for 4 years
Whether you are applying regular or early you need to get that SAT up.
@jdschooled5 what is a good score for University of Michigan?
Do you think it is a reach?
Michigan’s 25% SAT score is around 1900. To have a solid shot you would need to have around a 2200 which is the 75% SAT. I would say right now it is a reach.
As of now, its a reach. I applied last year for Industrial Engineering as well from California and got rejected. I had a 2130 and a 3.76 UW GPA. My EC’s were slightly worse than your’s but I still don’t think my stats were up to part. Most have 3.9 is GPA (like yours) and 2150+ sat.
Get your SAT up and you might have a decent chance.
@iamjack would you mind telling me what colleges you got accepted into?
@Madeline25 Your numbers are way off. For UMich as a whole, the mid 50 SAT this year is 2040-2280. For CoE, it would be even higher.

For OP, your GPA is also below the admission average of 3.9 for CoE. It is a rather high reach for you right now. Try to bring up your SAT to 2200+ for a better chance. Last year, the admission average ACT score was 33 which is equivalent to ~2220 in SAT. Even with that score, the admission chance would still be lower than 50% due to the low admission rate. The CoE overall admission rate last year was below 25% including in state students.
@rfaamsia I got accepted into UCSB, Cal poly, UIUC, Purdue, UC davis and virginia tech. I got rejected from most of the other engineering schools (ga tech, u mich, northwestern, berkley, la, irvine, etc)
Oh my! I must have accidentally grabbed another year’s numbers. Sorry!
^ That would be from at least 3 years ago.
