Glad to hear you’re interest in W&M. If W&M is your top choice, you should absolutely apply ED. The ED pool has about 1100 students whereas our overall pool has 13,000 students. It goes without saying that it’s easier for any applicant to stand out in a pool of 1100.

Your ACT score is within our middle 50% range of OOS students. Any reason you plan to take the SAT again instead of taking the ACT again? It doesn’t matter to us and we’ll only consider your absolute best score but the ACT is generally offered in September so there is a chance to take that again before the ED deadline and you’re used to that exam already.

Your course selection seems solid. Hard to guage your GPA without more information but if you have mostly As than it’s a strong GPA.

You didn’t list very many ECs (it seems to be chem club and volunteering). ECs are one area where students can distinguish themselves whether it’s in the ECs with which they are involved or their level of leadership. Given that your class size is huge (1500 students in your senior class) we do not expect a great deal of leadership given the competition for such positions is so massive in large high schools and the fact that you have leadership is great but we also know the opportunities for involvement at large high schools are also quite volumous so we do like to see students actively involved.

For more on any applicant’s chances and our process, check out our Admit It! blog on the topic ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/))

Thanks so much for that information. I actually meant to change my class size; I quickly skimmed over the class size and thought it said school size. My class size is significantly smaller (around 380). I am very worried about my extracurricular activities. I wasn’t involved in school during my first two years, but when I discovered chemistry I think I really found my passion. Is there any way (as a rising senior) to set myself apart in spite of my few activities?

Extracurricular activities are one part of our application. Whereas you may be less competitive than other applicants in that area given that you weren’t involved early on you may be more competitive in any one of the other areas (transcript, grades, standardized tests, essays, etc.). Just utilize all components of the application you can (both the required and optional) to show us who you are as a student and and a person. Make use of letters of recommendation, the essay and any optional components you feel pertain to you to showcase yourself in the best light possible and share with us what makes you unique and why we would want you to join our study body.
