Chances for a Dedicated Musician

I was wondering about my chances of getting into Brown. My grades are not great… I haven’t put much effort into school up until now (senior year) because I have been focusing on music. ( In addition, my mother became ill with Rheumatoid Arthritis in my sophmore year and made me slightly distraught. ) My average last year was 87 unweighted (no APs or anything) and for the first marking this year my average jumped to a weighted 95 with AP Calc and AP English. I have awesome recs. from my AP Calc and AP Eng teachers likewise my guidance counselor.

I have an okay amount of activities, but probably relatively small compared to other people.
I’m in the National Honor Society, Key Club, an anti-racism club, Math Team, History Club, ( damn now that I think of it I forgot to put chess club on the app)and some other stuff. Also, I didn’t write about each activity on my app. - only listed them: ( After finding this site yesterday I realize I should have written stuff : ((((

**Now… this is what might set me apart. I began playing guitar in Sept. of my sophmore year (been playing only for a lil over 2 yrs). *Having only been playing guitar for 2 years, I revieved a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music guitar camp last summer, based on my original compositions. I have also sent Brown a CD of some of my recordings. My music is very very unique, melodic, and usually happy sounding. If anyone has any ideas as to whether this will help- Please! lemme know!

P.S. I enjoy learning about the world as much, if not more than I do music and i have tried to exemplify that in the application.

Some one please reply

if i'm kidding myself feel free to say it

i highly doubt you will get in...but there is always a shot with the music aspect.

what about sat/act score?

Not good... 1700

My dad graduated from UPENN... do you think that would have any affect on my chances?

with a 1700 SAT I, no offense man but...i severely doubt it.

if you could pull it up to 2000 somehow and apply to upenn, then you may have a shot there since youre legacy. but 1700 is simply too low for an ivy league caliber school.

Guitaarman - why are you applying to Brown? It sounds like your passion is music and perhaps there are several other schools with stronger music programs. I am not saying that you shouldn't apply to Brown, but I was curious why you are choosing it. Brown has many music opportunities but there may be other colleges which will give you the same opportunities and yoiu might find it easier to get into.

Over the summer I had the privelage of going to a guitar camp at the Berklee College of Music and so I got a good feel for what the music world is like. I realized I would be very limited if I were to go to a music conservatory because most of the people there are only (or mostly) interested in music and... thats not me. I enjoy learning about everything... music is just my creative passion. If I happen to meet the right people at some point in my life and land a record deal then cool, but I'm not going to limit myself by going to a music conservatory or a school with a good music program that has a sucky learning environment.

I think that at Brown I would be surrounded by very cool people and it would be extremely inspirational. In addition, I like how Brown is based on a learning for the sake of learning philosophy and I think thats the best way to learn. Hence I am also applying to Bard and Hamphire. If I were to go to Brown I would deffinitely take advantage of what is around me.

I'm hoping that they will listen to my CD realize how original I am.
