GPA: 3.3 UW 3.8 W
Rank: ~15%
SAT: 2020 (retaking)
ACT: 31 (also retaking. is it worth it to send both scores?)
ECs: Okay, but not great. 4 years of varsity tennis and French club, a little volunteering.

Other: Half Hispanic/Asian, from Texas. I'm hoping my ethnicity and location will make Minnesota a "match" because I really like the low OOS tuition, the fact that I'd get plenty of AP credit, and the school's location (urban with a campus). I've already applied but I'm not quite sure what my chances are. Any feedback is welcome!

SAT and ACT are definitely high enough. I don’t remember what the UMN goes by for GPA as far as weighted or unweighted. Due to your high SAT and ACT I’d think you’d have a pretty good chance off that alone.

Ya it will help you socialize and make it easier to get to school ect…but its also a big bill and a huge stress if it breaks down not to mention having to cough up gas money and ppl asking for rides for free.

It was useful for me because I had an internship in St. Paul in the Spring semester, but I very rarely used it for social stuff. So I’d reccomend not bringing it unless the 300-400 a semester you’ll have to pay isn’t a big deal.

Edit: You should get into CLA with a 31, and your OOS status will actually help. The U is trying to become more geographically diverse (an absurd percentage of students are from Minnesota and Wisconsin).

I’ve been at the U for two months and my step-brother is a sophomore, and neither of us see any reason whatsoever to have a car on campus. The Metrotransit system is awesome for getting around the cities, and an unlimited bus pass is super cheap ($97) compared to $300+ for a parking spot in a bad location. Unless you’re planning on driving home often, I don’t see a reason to have it. You don’t need it to get around in the cities.
