Chances for admission as an English major?

Hey, all! Just wondering what my chances of admission would be to Kenyon or if I'm on the right track. I would intend to major in English. Thanks in advance!

White, female, senior at a high school in MD!

4.0 UW GPA, about 4.6 W (probably higher since I took several APs last yr & haven't checked since beginning of last yr)

30 ACT, 2020 SAT (I would probably send ACT)

Leadership: President of forensics & debate club, editor-in-chief of yearbook, probably president of my school's chapter of Quill & Scroll Int'l Honorary Society next year, probably editor-in-chief or other high leadership position of school paper next yr

ECs: NHS, Science NHS, Math NHS, Quill & Scroll Int'l Honorary Society, Journalism Club, Junior Exec Board, Senior Exec Board, newspaper, yearbook, ran for county Student Member of the B.O.E. but lost, participated in Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Pageant (probably won't put all these on application though)

Lots of community service, was "big sister" to girl who lived in public housing in single-parent household, also tutored in said public housing community

Have/had 2 part-time jobs

APs I will graduate with: US history, English Language & Composition (4 on test), Calculus A/B (4 on test), Literature, and Environmental Science

Senior year course load: AP Lit, AP Environ. Science, French IV, Internship, Journalism III and IV, Publications IV and V.

I've won regional awards for my photography/writing and was published in an international magazine (a photograph I took was published)

I'm a very good writer and believe my common app essay is very well written. I've visited Kenyon already, talked to people in the admissions office, and talked via e-mail with my admissions rep.

Thanks again, everyone! If I left anything out just let me know.

You credentials sound really good! If it is at all possible, and you know that Kenyon is it for you, apply ED. Kenyon had over 1600 apps last year, and I am sure a good percentage of those were females that were good writers, and wanted to major in English. They can’t accept them all. My S put one foot on the Kenyon campus and that was it, he knew that was where he wanted to be… no other college could even come close. He applied ED in Nov, was accepted in Dec. He will be matriculating a year from now, after a gap year.

I was thinking about it, but the only hitch in my decision is that I don’t know if I want to fully commit myself to a school that doesn’t have my specific major (I want to be a journalist but Kenyon doesn’t have journalism).

I absolutely love Kenyon, I just don’t know if I would pick a school that has journalism over Kenyon (like NYU). I feel like I should be certain about that if I were to apply ED. Thank you so much for the advice, though, and I will continue to think about it! Congrats to your son!

Three things.

 1. 6000 apps last year, 1600 for ED
 2. Get a study book and take the test again! I went from a 31 to 1 35 from June to October.
 3. While Kenyon doesn’t have a journalism major we have one of the best English Programs on Earth. and there are ample opportunities for journalistic endeavors, you could even freelance. Unless you are looking to broadcast you don’t need a big school. Plus the overall experience here is so rich. Do an overnight, and see if you like us.

Yeah it’s really only my math score I have to get up- all my sub scores are in the 30s except for math, sadly!

And when I visited Kenyon I talked to an admissions person and she said the same thing about journalism! I really do love the atmosphere at Kenyon so much, and I hope to do an overnight in the fall! I really will think about applying ED.

Thank you so much for the info, I’m really glad you like your school so much!

I think you’re in as long as you show interest, which is one thing Kenyon takes into account. One of my good friends, who imo was definitely qualified, applied to it as a safety and never visited was waitlisted because he didn’t seem invested in the school. But I think you are fine. Anyways, you certainly have shown that Kenyon is a top choice of yours!

I’d like to disagree slightly with the @missouriboy‌ . Since journalism is a very competitive field, they will also look for experience such as internships and writing experience. Basically anything to make you stand out. Definitely take advantage of whatever opportunities you have in this respect. You certainly don’t need to major in journalism to go into it, but it does help if you have an alumni network or a strong journalism program. For that reason, also consider schools like Mizzou, Syracuse, Emerson, etc. They have rather strong journalism programs as well.

Congrats on finding a school that fits you, though!

Thanks for the advice! Out of the schools you listed, I’ve only really looked into Syracuse. I didn’t like that their majors were so specific for journalism, since I still don’t know what aspect of journalism I want to go more in-depth with. I would prefer to explore the field when studying it, rather than one concentrated part of it.

I will look into the other schools you listed, though, and thanks again!

Thanks for correction on Kenyon’s admission stats missouriboy:) I am still in shock on how many app’s they had this year!!

There were 1600 apps for ED last year? Holy… from 352 to 1600 that’s just incredible!

Actually I was mistaken, there were 1600 offers of admission, ED was about 450.

Um ED is a really good option. It’s really hard to get into Kenyon now. My stats were like yours (GPA a bit lower, ACT a little higher), and I showed a bunch of interest. I got waitlisted. Luckily, I was offered a spot in the freshman class eventually and am attending this fall, but I would recommend visiting (do an overnight they’re really fun!) and then if you love it, apply ED.

In all likely hood, I’m probably not going to apply ED actually. I know it would probably increase my chances but I don’t think I’m confident enough about it being the ONLY school for me. I would absolutely love to attend, I just don’t think it’s my single favorite school.

Also, I visited the campus already, e-mailed with my admissions rep expressing interest, and am doing an overnight stay and attending a class in October. Hopefully that helps show how much I love the school!

Evto97, don’t apply ED. You deserve more freedom than that. Do write a letter to Kenyon admissions explaining why you love them so much. Your only real chance for rejection is if they don’t think you’re interested. I drove all the way up to Kenyon from TN to visit and to interview, and they still wait-listed me because I was overqualified.

Luckily, your qualifications are about right. As long as you make your interest abundantly clear by interacting with Kenyon beyond your Common App, you should be A-OK. Finally, remember that if you get wait-listed you should definitely ask to stay on it. A wait-list in your case is more likely to be based on a perceived lack of interest (however untrue) than on borderline qualifications.

Great job discovering Kenyon and working your last four years to make it there. It really is a beautiful place. I visited nearly a dozen schools the fall and spring of my senior year, and Kenyon was one of only two that left me literally awestruck (the other was Princeton). If you go there I know you’ll be happy.

That said, if I had played into Kenyon’s hands and ED’d like they beg everyone to, I would not be going to my dream school next year. So, do keep your options open. You’re somewhat competitive at schools that are academically superior to Kenyon (if aesthetically inferior).

Good luck!

Wow, that’s fantastic advice!

I’m so happy for you, I hope you have an amazing college experience! Thanks for all the info!
