Chances for Admission- Fall 2012-Freshman

Hello guys. I am a Senior in San Diego, CA who's #1 choice for college is the University of Washington. My unweighted gpa from grades 10-12 is 3.32 and weighted of 3.68. However, I had a 3.17 weighted and a 3.0 unweighted Sophomore year, followed by a 4.23 weighted and 3.7 unweighted Junior Year. I have an SAT of 1920 and an ACT of 27.

I am taking 5 AP classes this year(Senior year) and as a Junior took 3 AP classes. I also go to a school that had 20+ kids go to UC Berkeley last year and is one of the best public schools in the state. My extra-curriculars include over 140 hours of volunteer work, JV Basketball, Previous jobs, a science club and a screenwriter on my own time.

So what do you guys think my chances are? I am an out-of-state student, obviously, who has shown a VERY positive grade trend lately. My SAT score is VERY slightly below the UW average, but only by like 20 points and my ACT is in the same boat. Any insight? thanks so much!

You’re getting in.

Only because you are out-of-state. We’re poor. We need money for Husky Stadium renovation.

I hope so, but I just am not sure. I visited there this summer and it is just an amazing place. If I get in, I will go for sure. But, idk. My GPA is well…disappointing. But I hope you are right

You will get in.

My counselor at my CC told me basically the same - out-of-state freshman are at an advantage than in-state freshman. That’s why I stayed at my CC after finishing one year of Running Start.

Anyways, UW really does need money. You do have to pay more tuition, they will raise tuition next year - yes, you will most likely get in.

any more thoughts on my chances?

Yes, your GPA is slightly on the lower end. However, you have a strong application otherwise. Show the admissions dept that you belong here (through essays), and you’ll be fine. =]

Your GPA might hurt you but like others said, you’re OOS and that gives you an edge. Maybe I’ll be seeing you at UW next fall! Good luck from another applicant :)

@AheadoftheGame good decision. A lot of people I know will refuse to go to CC and are going to WWU,WSU, and applying to get in from there. I did something similar to you–it will pay off- BIG TIME

any more thoughts?

The most important thing for you to do is apply. I doubt anything said here would change your idea on whether or not to apply to UW. Just make the best essays you can possible and submit it. Good Luck! (I’m applying there as well).

Well, a bunch of my classmates have heard back and got in and I have yet to hear back from UW, so as evident from this forum, in which 90% of the posts are mine, I’m kind of freaking out haha.
