I never really knew how highly-touted Minnesota's ChemE program was until a few days ago. Thus, I am just now submitting my application, just after the priority deadline. I'm from Virginia, but cost isn't really an issue due to the very low OOS tuition rate. However, I know there is a scholarship available for OOS students which would make the cost equal to in-state. Since the website says that scholarships are on a space-available basis after December 15, I was wondering what my chances may be for obtaining any kind of merit aid, along with my chances for general admission.

ipepper…Congratulations on your outstanding grades and test scores!! I would say your chances for being admitted into the Chem Eng program at the U are excellent. It is one of the most competitive programs to get into, but your excellent academic record should make you a great choice for them.

Scholarships may be a different matter though. The U is very generous with merit scholarships for students with your level stats, but since the deadline for priority consideration has passed and many scholarships offers have gone out it’s hard to say how they’ll handle your application. I think the Gold National (difference between IS and OOS tuition) is a very real possibility, but anything above that may depend on how quickly other students respond to their scholarship offers. Had you applied earlier I think you would’ve likely been offered a Presidential and/or a Bentson scholarship of some amount, and it’s possible you may still.

You may want to call the admissions office and ask them what kind of timeline you might expect for hearing back since you’re applying after the priority deadline. We spoke with them several times last year when D1 was applying and they were extremely friendly and helpful. They may not be able to give you anything definitive, but you never know. Good Luck with your app!! Our D1 absolutely LOVES being there. I hope for your sake everything works out.

Thank you for the assistance wolverine. I definitely hope I am in contention for some kind of merit aid, but like I said even if I didn’t the low OOS cost would pretty much put Minnesota at the same pricetag as the in-state options, none of which have as good of a ChemE program. I would definitely be content with the Gold National Award, and hopefully some kind of luck allows me to get one of the other ones you mentioned. Good to hear that your daughter loves being there, I think if I got in the only major turn-off would probably be the freezing cold winters (my mom went to UMinn-Duluth for grad school and recalled days where it was 40 below). I’ll definitely try calling the admissions office, but from what I’ve heard people who apply before the deadline get a response about a month later if their grades are relatively good. Not sure how that would change by applying after the deadline, but I’ll definitely want to know.

@donnai@ipepper94 Keep in mind that OOS tuition is expected to rise 15%/year for the next 4 years. Unless you get Gold National, the tuition increases will be very steep.
