Chances for an International?

Hey People. I know I shouldn't be asking this but I'm just asking for honest opinions as to whether or I have a realistic chance to be admitted to Uni Chicago RD. I've been thinking because I'm and International so I know I'll be at a disadvantage. I'm worried mostly because I'm international and I hear the admit rate for internationals is quite low?

Uchicago is my second choice overall but definately my first choice for Economics. I loved the visit there and the economics there is as good if not better than Harvard. So if I decide on doing economics then Chicago will be my first choice.

Please don't say how great my chances due to my academics and scores and stuff because chicago looks beyond your grades and I'm not sure what they look for in applicants.

I'm from Tasmania which is in Australia.

SAT 1- 1550 (Maths 750, Verbal 800). Still waiting for Oct scores

SAT II - 800 Maths, 800 Lit, 790 Pysics.

Rank: 1 out of 221. My school finally worked a rank for me.

Secondary Record? Yeah its pretty much decent. Not sure how GPA works exactly but I pretty much get A's all round. I'll let UC work out my GPA for me.

Extra Curricular?

RUGBY- the best game ever ladies and gentlemen. State Club U18's champions, state rep and on all star list at National championships.

State U21 Table Tennis champion (6 years running), U18 Champion. National U16 placed 3rd in championship few years ago.

Piano- State recital, era works U18 winner (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005) as well as LMUS diploma (highest possible diploma availble here)

These are the main ones. I'm going to leave out the ones that don't really mean much.

Awards.

Top in State for Maths Specialised, Economics, and Info systems.
Prize in Aus Maths Comp (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004)
Plaque in the Chemistry Quiz (2003, 2004)
Random loads of other awards.

Community Service?

Worked at Nursing Homes on almost all day Saturdays since Y7
Worked every winter holidays for the Salvation Army +
Amnesty Int Coord for Tasmania (not using this because it really is a meaningless role and I did screw up in it a bit)

Work Experience?

Well I work pretty much all my spare time weekends at the local supermarket either at the casheir or stacking boxes since y7. Doesn't pay much but enough for me to spend. Ever since I turned 18 and finished school, I run the supermarket by myself after 7pm to closing time (i close up the shop).

Languages? Profficient in English (duh), and Mandarin (thanks to stepmom)

THANKS
Alex

Btw- My major is in either Maths or Economics. Thanks

You seriously wasted your time posting this. C'mon, do you think chances get any better than a 4.0 valedictorian with a 1550, nearly perfect SAT IIs and ridiculously good ECs and awards? God, I hope you don't get in. You must be one of those kids who shows up for every test crying that he'll fail, and ends up with 100% in the end.

Well I read last years results thread and for while it seemed people with 1300 sats were getting in when 1500's were not. I know the essay is important but im just not sure how to approach the process.

Your forgetting that i'm international. I don't have any insanely good academic awards and that I'm looking at the subject with the highest competition.

Why are you so agro? why would you cry over a test?

You're pathetic. You're right, there's nothing amazing about "Top in State" for Math or being the U21 Table Tennis champion. Maybe all those 1500s didn't get in because they came off as insecure compliment-fishers?

you obviously don't know anything about my state ...

All i'm asking is simple question all you do is give me crap. I hope not ppl at uchicago are like you.

But what is it about your application that would get you rejected, essays aside? Look at this question and you'll see what I mean by how stupid you're being.

It's ridiculous--almost ALL of your stats and ECs show that you are clearly the best student, piano player, table tennis player in your state, regardless of the fact that it's Tasmania. If they don't take you, it's because your essays and recs sucked, not because of anything you posted here.

what jpps1 means is....you have a good chance, and you don't even need to be posting this. by posting you come across as those many others who say "I've got ONE B! I've got 2390! AM I SCREWED??!" Insecure people who make others feel lousy.

what kjoodles wants to know is...he's aware that his stats are good enough for chicago, but the only thing he wants to know is whether being an international seriously deflates the weight of those stats. the answer is no. and like jpps1 says, unless your rec and essays are pathetic, you have a good shot.

hope this clears up. :)

What he said.
