Chances for Business Schools/Some Ivies

Here are my stats so far, i am currently a junior who will be applying next year:

Gender: male
Race: Indian
GPA: Projected 4.6 W, unweighted 4.0 (thats going to be tough)
Rank: 3/596

SAT I: Taking it Dec. 5 for the first time, expected 2150-2250 (Expected M:740+, CR 760+, W 720+)
SAT II: Signed up for June exams in US hist. Biology, and Math II. In math and science i will probably have 740-780 since i will have just finished studying for the AP's. With math II i will have to restudy because i took precalc last year, and am now in Calc.

Courses: Toughest, 10 AP's, Some ones that i think might stick out are Multivariable Calc. (taken as a senior) and AP Studio Art (senior)
**For the academy i am in we have to do a mandatory 100 hour mentorship or 140 hour independent study in a math or science field. Would this be impressive or not since technically it is part of my curriculum.

EC's: This is what i consider my weak spot, what do you guys think

Debate Team (4 years) Captain 2 years, Regional Finalist

Theater (4 years) Acting and Light Crew (2nd in district, 2nd in region, 8th in state for a one act play)

Scholastic Bowl (3 years) captain 1 year (hopefully district and regional champs this year)

Football JV (2 years)-does JV make it weaker, i mean it was still a huge time commitment of 3+ hours a day and in the summer.

French Honor Society

Various Other activities: Operation Smile, Asian Culture Club, STEM Club, Model Judiciary

Comm. Service:
Volunteer for the summer reading program at library (50 hours)
Volunteering at an aquarium. (hopefully 50 hours)

Work Exp.

Worked as a graphic Designer for a local ad company one summer.

Now for the colleges I am applying to, in order of where i want to go most

UPenn (Wharton)
NYU (Stern)
Cornell
UVa ( I live in Virginia)
Dartmouth
Duke
MIT
Stanford

a little bump.

the second bump.

I feel that my EC’s need more leadership but i am not sure if it is a must.

gosh a third bump and no replies, i feel lonely…jk, but seriously can i get into a top business school if i continue on my intended path.

a 4th bump, maybe i can get a record for bumps.

Alright. First off with the schools you are looking at (save for UVA and NYU) definitely score 2200+. Second, your problem really isn’t your ECs - although they are definitely not exceptional. Rather, your lack of a hook coupled with your ethnicity is the blaring problem.
Despite this though, you are definitely an elite candidate who will probably (if your scores are 2200+) be put into the elite “unhooked” candidate pool and consequently be subjected to a crap-shoot to see if you get in anywhere. So now for the chancings… (with a 2200)
NYU is a match
UVA is a match
Stanford - sizeable reach
MIT - sizeable reach
Duke - reach
Dartmouth - reach
UPenn (Wharton) - High reach (but still do try. I think you have a shot)
Cornell - reach

Don’t be disheartened though as for me, unless you are the best in the world at something, every Ivy is a reach. Btw, Obviously Varsity football would look better than JV, but it at least shows you attempted athletic ECs.

Yeah i know i have the cards stacked against me when it comes to ehtnicity and the no hook, what a world we live in, it is almost like a form of discrimination in reverse, but i guess we all have to deal with that.

I realize my EC’s are not exceptional but i feel that their strengths are that i have been committed to them.

Are MIT and Stanford really sizable reaches, i always thought those were just as selective as HYP. Is duke that much harder to get into than UVa, i again thought those were on the same level.

lately i have been thinking more along the lines of getting a bachelor’s degree and then going to get an MBA, so with that in mind would UPenn CAS be easier to get into.

I am no expert, but in my opinion MIT is not as selective as HYPS. That being said I do agree that Stanford is as selective as HYP. But as aforementioned, you are undoubtedly an elite student, and if your write some killer essays along with great recs who knows what could happen. Duke is definitely more selective than UVA. I would compare Duke to some of the lesser Ivies (an oxymoron, I know) such as Brown and Cornell. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but I had the assumption that UVA is easier to get into in state as opposed to out of state?

UPenn CAS would probably be a good idea  - Wharton is as selective as HYPS

Also, affirmative action really, really is a shame. It’s so sad that so many top - just as hard working students get denied because of ethnicity. Albeit, I personally feel that at one point it was relevant. For example, right after the civil rights movement. But now, it is defunct, cruel, and outdated. Best of luck though!!!

PS. I would also suggest taking a look at some LACs…

Yes, UVa in state is a lot easier to get into, and cheaper, 10,000 a year i think. MIT is looking better to me since i think one can get into sloan business school if they simply declare their major to be business?

What are LACs?

LACs are Liberal Arts Colleges. They are universities that focus on the undergraduate programs rather than the graduate programs. In addition, they are usually smaller (small class sizes and intimate student-professor relationships) and are always private. Many people are reluctant to apply to them because they have a smaller “wow” factor of name recognition than say, the Ivies or Duke. Regardless, they are great schools. Some to look at or at the least consider: Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Swarthmore, and Bowdoin. But also be wary that these schools are just as competitive to get into as a lot of the schools you mentioned in the op. I’m currently a senior and am applying to a lot of the schools you are plus the LACs.
P.S if your the adventurous type take a look at Oxford/Cambridge/McGill (safety where my brother attends) I’m currently in the application process for Oxford and am crossing my fingers every day!! It’s really exciting and nerve-wracking.

Hmm, i will have to look into that, although i think my parents are not so open to LACs. Sadly i am not that adventurous to go overseas for undergraduate studies, i want to put distance between me and my parents but not an ocean.

McGill = Canada ;)

Come back in a year when you actually know what your test scores and GPA will be.

Nothing will be certain then, and everything is even less certain now; there’s no point in chancing you.

Hell, I legitimately thought I’d get a 35 on my ACT and a 2400 on my SAT (if practice tests were any indicators). I got neither. Predicting what you’ll get on standardized tests is stupid, to be frank.
