What are my son’s chances of getting in as a Civil Engineering major?
Cal Poly GPA - 4.05
ACT - 31 (Math / English)
He thinks his MCA score is 2250. Extra points for 10 semesters of math, EC 11-5 hrs/week, work 1-5, leadership role in EC. No misc bonus points.
On a side note, I can’t believe how many kinds of Engineering degrees there are compared to 30 years ago! Yet very few of the UCs offer Civil Engineering.
GPA and ACT look competitive. Civil Engineering has around a 36% acceptance rate. MCA score looks low for Engineering. If he applied ED, I think he would have a better chance than RD.
Your GPA and ACT are competitive, but I think something must be wrong with your MCA score. Your GPA and ACT would produce a MCA score above 2250. I would guess you have somewhere near 4300+ MCA score. (That is just a guess in my head). I would say a decent shot for civil in ED.
Reef = You are right. That’s what I get for not looking at his notes first. His MCA is 4262 by his estimate. Might still be a little low for many of the engineering degree programs. Applying RD, as he is not sure enough to make SLO his first choice.
